C-sections

Belly Binding Question

As of right now it looks like I will most likely be getting a c-section. Due to complications and breech baby. I was wondering what you all recommend as far as a belly binder. I would like one that does hips and belly if possible. If its not possible which hip and belly binder do you recommend? Ive heard different things about what the hospital will give you, so I am curious as to what people bought or what they got from the hospital.

Re: Belly Binding Question

  • I had to ask the nurse for one at my hospital and it worked great. I used it for 3 - 4 weeks post partum. For me it was more for a feeling of support when getting up from a sitting or lying position -- it helped me feel like my insides weren't going to fall out. It's such a strange feeling to have abdominal surgery and not be able to use those muscles for a while when everything on your body is surrounded by your core.

I remember only taking it off to shower and when it was off it was such a strange feeling to not have that extra support/protection around such a sensitive area!

Anyways, for baby #2, I plan to still use the same wrap as last time but after 6 weeks PP I plan to buy the Tupler diastis recover program wrap and start her program to getting my abs back in shape. I was not aware of this program after I had my first 2 years ago and I have paid the price with ab separation dearly.

I have not read much on hip binders - it takes a while for your hips to go back to their normal position, if ever and even longer for your rib cage (up to 18 mo I was once told!)

  • My hospital also gave me a belly binder without even asking....but, boy, am I glad they gave it to me!  I agree with PP that the main motivation for using it is for support and anytime I didn't have it on, I felt strange.  The downside to the hospital band (at least in my experience) is that it was really itchy and caused a rash.  I ended up wearing it over my clothes when I was at home.  If I had to go out, i would put one of my pregnancy belly bands under it to keep it off my skin.

I don't know about the hips...

  • Yeah I also developed a small, itchy rash but that went away after a few days of trying to wear it less and air out the area -- if you know what I mean -- we go thru so many hormonal changes and sweat a lot of the fluids out of our body that I think this caused the rash under the band.
