Kindergarten WWYD?

DS came home yesterday with a bump on his head (near the temple). It's skinned a little and definitely bruised. I asked him what happened, DH asked him, even DD asked him, but he says he doesn't know. DS had a substitute teacher yesterday. Would you email the regular teacher to see if they know what happened? I figure they probably don't know since they weren't there, but this has me concerned since I don't know how he got hurt.

Re: Kindergarten WWYD?

  • How is this a question?  Of course!
  • I am glad that you both said that. I had the email drafted, and then wasn't sure if I was being "that" mom, especially since it wasn't the regular teacher.

  • Loading the player...
  • yeah, I'd call too.  I would think that when it happened if it left a mark that he would have said "ow!" at least, right???

Any time my girls go to the nurse for ANYTHING, the nurse calls...every.single.time.  "hey, the girls are fine, just wanted you to know that Audrey was in here with a skinned hand.  I cleaned it and put a bandaid on it.  She said she fell on the playground."  She definately doesn't HAVE to call, but its nice to hear it from the nurse...because by the end of the day...my girls would have forgotten too.

  • See, I probably wouldn't.

Shithappens.  If he was fine, I don't see what the point of finding out is?!  If it was a recurring thing, sure.  But if it was a one time thing, and he wasn't coming home bruised everyday, I wouldn't worry about it.

Then again, I know that Joey and Cam get bruised/banged up all.the.time.  They are rough and tumble kids and Cam is a total clutz.

In situations like this, I try to think "What would my parents do?"  (or parents of that generation).  And they definitely wouldn't have called.  I think it would have gone like this "Jodi, what happened to your head?"  Me - "I don't know!"  Mom- "What do you mean you don't know?  You have a bump and bruise!  Are you ok?"  Me - "Yea, I'm fine!"  Mom - "ok.  Now go back outside and take your sister with you!"

    LOL

  • If your DS doesn't know what happened and you didn't get a pre-emptive phone call or note in his bag, I'll bet a dollar the teacher won't know.  Heck, if it is a substitute, she won't even know who the kid is at this point.

My kids come home marked up quite a bit, I figure it is all part of being a kid.  Bumps, bruises, scrapes...if there's no blood and nothing is broken I don't expect a call.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I would e-mail the teacher and the school nurse.  I agree that the teacher probably won't know about it but she can contact the sub to find out.  I'd imagine that an injury like that is supposed to be documented.

    Yep, this. All of it.

Ditto this and Jodi. My kids have bruises/scrapes all the time. I don't know where most of them come from. I rarely ask unless it looks funny. Hell, I get bruises from who knows where, too.

  • A bruise or bump near the temple might not even show until hours after the incident.
