a long shot

Anyone have any experience with the feeding clinic @ Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore?

Re: a long shot

  • my son goes to the feeding clinic there.  he is just followed...we have not done the intensive feeding clinic.  a friend of a friend did it to wean her son off of a g-tube and was very happy with it.  another friend will be doing the intensive inpatient program in a few months.  we are very happy with the program from our stand point.

  • What does the outpatient portion entail for you?

I'm thinking at most he'd do the day program, if that...but we def do have issues that need to be addressed.

  • we are seen by the doctor (Dr.Levey who is the director of the feeding clinic but also happens to be our KKI doc for the CP clinic), a nutrionist, OT, and a nurse.  my husband tends to be the one to take him to this appt.  they go over his eating history, check his weight, ask about current illness, etc.  then they watch him eat and listen to him (for aspiration).  i am very happy with them because they have been happy with his weight and eating recogizing that he is going at his own pace.  they also haven't pushed a swallow study or feeding tube on us which i really appreciate especially because my son is severly delayed.  they take each case child by child meaning that they want to do what is best for each child but recognize that each child grows and develops at their own pace.

when we first got referred there we thought we were automatically going in for a swallow study, etc.  but that wasn't the case.  best bet would be to have your pediatrician refer you (most KKI programs do require a referral/script from your pediatrician even if you don't need a referral insurance wise) and then see what they have to say and what avenue they think would be best.

  • Although I didn't post this - thanks for the information.  We go in next week for our initial evaluation.  They usually don't take children under 1 year, but after reviewing our case, decided to take our little guy.  Not sure whether to be happy or sad about that.

We think he's just g-tube dependent, so we don't know what to expect.

  • oh and just to throw it out there dr.levey is very nice but he can be somewhat monotone.  don't let that throw you off.  he's really been great.  he is just very dry and he'll say funny things too but it'll be dry.  i wasn't too sure of him at first but he's really helpful with us.

just wanted to let you know! :)
