Pain where the spinal was placed?

So it's been almost a week since my LO was born, and my back is killing me where my spinal was. They only ran it for maybe 5 minutes before they realized it wasn't doing anything and just put me under. Any idea when he pain will fade?

Re: Pain where the spinal was placed?

  • I have never heard of "running a spinal" -- I thought a spinal was a single injection and an epidural was a continuos flow administered by anesthesia?

  • They told me a spinal was a catheter inserted into the actual spine and the epidural was a catheter inserted into the pocket around the spine... Both are continuously running anesthesia. At least, that's what they did at my hospital. It's probably some hick way of doing things; I did walk out of my room one day to an Amish family standing at the nursery window.

  • it IS normal for it to be tender for a little while..kinda like a bruise..but it shouldn't be real painful..and should be getting better soon...try some ice or heat
  • Why wasn't it working?  Mine didn't work either, but from talking to my cousin (a medical prof.) he said the anesthesiologist stuck a nerve. My back still hurts and is really stiff. I think the rain has a lot to do with my pain lately (but still due to the spinal)

  • They tried to give me a spinal, in 4 locations, 4 attempts at each location. So that was 16 pokes with the spinal needle plus 4 with the numbing stuff. My back hurt for 3 months. I ended up getting general anesthesia. The pain did go away eventually.

I don't know. My OB said the anesthesiologist said that sometimes or for some people it just doesn't work. My epidural wasn't as effective either, I could move my legs the entire time.

  • I got an epidural and for a while my back would ache in that general area if I was standing for a long period of time. It only lasted a few weeks.
