When to change the nipple size on bottles

Hi ladies!  This is my first post on this board, so I apologize if this question has already been asked.  My daughter is 8 weeks old and breastfeed.  Since I have gone back to work she gets bottles during the day at daycare.  Right now she is using the size 1 nipples and getting between 4 and 4 1/2 oz.  I was just curious when most of you plan on going up to the size 2 nipples.  I have read different things so I am not sure what is correct.

TIA!

Re: When to change the nipple size on bottles

  • Depends on the bottle brand.  We used Born Free bottles and never made it to the level 3 nipple, it was just too fast.  But on the other hand, brands like Playtex have super slow nipples.

When she's collapsing the nipple a lot or seeming frustrated at the flow being too slow, you should try to go up.

  • We use NUK bottles, and the ones that came with it read 0+ for age, but they were faster than the playtex nursers we used. So it all depends on the bottle. Like PP said, when the nipple collapses and is frustrated, go up a size.

  • I know for Playtex nursers they say slow flow for 0-3months and medium flow for 3+ months. My DS is still on the slow flow, but I will be switching, I just need to go buy some medium flows.

  • I have to switch to med flows, as DH tells me our son gets frustrated with the bottle lately and I think it is the flow...

  • We use Playtex VentAire bottles, and their slow nipples are 0-3 months, fast are 3+. However, we didn't switch to the fast flow nipples until at least 5 or 6 months - DD1 would have choked on a faster flow sooner than that. We switched her when she showed signs of frustration while eating - taking forever to eat, taking a few sucks and pushing the bottle away.

Another case where it depends on the baby and the brand :)

  • I am glad you asked this because I have been considering trying a faster nipple. DS has been taking forever to finish a bottle, he takes a lot of breaks and looks around, pushes the nipple out and sometime into the corner of his mouth. The Dr. Browns level 2 nipples I have say 3 months and he is 10 weeks.

  • Our DD just moved up to the Avent size 3 (3+ months). She is 10 weeks old. She started taking over 30 minutes to finish a bottle and was falling asleep after 1-2 oz. Doesn't hurt to try the next size to see if LO loses to much out sides of mouth or seems to be choking. If so, wait and try again in a week or so. :)

  • Thanks everyone!  I use the Avent bottles.  She doesn't seem to be getting too frustrated with the size 1 nipples yet.  Maybe I'll try a size 2 with one of her bottles today to see how that work for her and switch if needed.

  • We use Born Free when he's away from me to nurse.  I just switched this morning and DH said he did much better on the bottle and drank it faster.

We also use the VentAire (skinny ones) and I agree with this statement about depending on baby/brand.  This morning I just switched DD to the FAST flow - what a difference!!  She was sucking so hard on the medium flow -- she was making the worst sucking noises and pushing the bottle away after only about 3 oz or so.  I just take extra care/time to make sure that she gets all of her burps out and is held upright for a little bit.
