Transitioning from Bottle to Sippy Cup

Hi girls!!!

I need some help! DD is 7 1/2 mo old & her pediatrician requested at her 6mo check up that she be taken off the bottle and start using a sippy cup. So I tried, tired again, tried agiain...but no success.

I've tried the Playtex sippy cups (since they're the same brand as her bottles) but she won't take it! I've tried NUBI sippy cups and she won't take them either! I even tried a NUBY sports cup with a straw-ish nipple hoping that would help...but no!

She's eating food now so she doesn't take a bottle often, just a couple ounces after breakfast, a quick drink here & there throughout the day, & then about 6 ounces before bed (ONLY if she ate an early dinner).

Have any of you transitioned from the bottle to a sippy cup successfully? If so, please share your tips and what cups worked for you!

Thank you!!!!!!

Re: Transitioning from Bottle to Sippy Cup

  • Your pedi wanted her completely off of a bottle? All sippies? IDK, but that seems a little odd at a 6 month check up. The AAP recommends to be off of a bottle at age one.

  • I would say this is a situation where you need to move at your LO's pace.  Our pedi said we could start her on a sippy at the 6 mo check-up, but never said DD had to move to it exclusively.  I tried a sippy with DD about a month ago, but she wasn't quite ready.  I haven't tried again yet, but I think I will in the next week or so.

  • I was ordered by WIC ladies to start one, but I'm going to let L play with hers in her high chair rather than do it hard core.  She likes my cups...for beating with a spoon!

  • So is she supposed to be getting formula or bm from her sippy cup instead of her bottle, or no more milk at all?  If it's none at all, it just seems a little odd.  Whenever we have talked about solids with our pediatrician, he has always stressed that her bottle is her main source of food, so it seems weird kind of weird to me ... but i'm no doctor, so...

Anyway, we use the Nuk learner sippy cup.  So far so good.  She doesn't use it all the time, but she tries.  I think it might be easier because it has a handle on each side of the cup.

  • we've been using the tommee tippe.  I offer it to Mj with every meal with some water in it.  He takes a couple sips and mostly plays with it but he's starting to get it.

  • We use the Playtex First Lil Gripper - it's a straw cup, but you can squeeze the bottom of it to push some liquid up the straw.  LO finally got the idea of how to suck through the straw and she's doing great with it now.

  • The nutritionist at WIC suggested I start trying transitioning my son from a bottle to a sippy cup. So, I went out and bought one a few weeks ago and the transitioning has NOT been working. However, at his six months check-up my pediatrician didn't mention anything about using a sippy cup at all! I really think it all depends on the child. My son can sit up, crawl, and stand on his own with support and is only seven months old, but doesn't seem interested at all in the sippy so I'll just have to wait a little bit to try again. I'm not worried. There's no rush! Every baby goes at his or her own speed.
