I like the name, I think of the actress Marlee Matlin first, but I also have not seen the movie or read the book.
I also think of Marlee Matlin and a character on a soap opera in the 80s (Another World, maybe?), then I think of Bob Marley. I actually don't mind this name and love the suggestion to use it as a NN for Marlene/Marlena.
Umm...yes...actually, that is the very FIRST time I ever heard the name. She was a twin on the show (the good twin, I believe). lol It was my mom's favourite show and I grew up watching it in the '80s. I always thought she was so sophisticated. lol I don't associate the name with that these days because it is such a distant memory of mine. But, yes, you are right. And I'm impressed that someone else remembered that!

However, unlike PP, I prefer it by and large to Marlene. It's twangy and very dated, IMO. It's a great middle name option because it honors your mom, but if was me, I'd rather be named Marley than Marlene.
Advice: Middle name Marlene. It's honoring to your mother because it's her name. And your daughter won't be associated with a dog.

Marley is so cutesy I can't see it on a professioanl or an adult. It's a great nn for Marlene or Maureen. A friend of mine growing up was Mariel (mar- E- elle) and I think that gets the same feel while not being so little baby cutesy tootsey.

All of this.
All of this.
I agree.
It's an ok NN but a formal FN would be better.
