Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Growth slowing way down?

Molls growth has started to slow a lot. Her height has not increased by more than an inch in 3 months and her weight last month was 17lbs 9 oz and at 8 months she was 18 lbs 2oz so only an increase of what 9 oz?

She had been going up by at least a lb a month sometimes two before that.

She has an appointment for her 9 month check up on the 16th, but her intake is the same, actually an increase in solids, she just so much more active.

Is there any reason to be concerned?

I don't know if the  online percent charts are correct but she's gone down since her 6 month appointment.

ETA: It really hit me today because it's the first time she's been called small for her age.

  • I wouldn't be worried - like you said, Molls is SUPER active for her age and her motor skills are pretty advanced.  It would be one thing if she were lethargic and uninterested in things, but she's basically the opposite.  Plus, she was a roly poly little thing at the beginning, maybe she's just evening out.

  • With DS he was around 97th percentile for the first 6 months or so and then tapered off to around 75th.  DD is off the charts for her weight and I expect that she will taper off by around 9 months as well.  They are moving a lot more after 6 months.  Are you BFing or FFing?  I'm not as familiar with FF, but I know that for BFing that kiddos will gain fast and then slow down and this is normal.

I was bf/ep for the first 4.5 months she has been getting formula since then. She is around 5-10th percentile for height now and down to 25-50 for weight down from 85th at her 6 month appointment her height was 25th.

  • Use this chart, I've found it to be the most accurate, especially at the beginning when we had SO much trouble with A gaining well.

Depending on Molls' exact birthdate, it looks like she's around the 50th for weight.  Probably not too worrisome.

Cool, thanks, it says 57%, it's just dropped about 20% in 2 1/2 months....Her height is so small.  My mom looked at my baby book and she is a full 4 inches shorter than I was at that age but 3 1/2 lbs heavier.

  • Nope, totally normal.

My son was 20lbs at 6 months. 15 months later he's only 27lbs. A 9oz weight gain in a month is fine. My DS actually lost weight between months 6-7 when he started crawling.

  • Definitely normal. DS only grew 1/4" between 4 and 6 months and the Pedi said it was normal. He grew 1 3/4" between 6 and 9 months (though I think the nurses often measure differently so it's not exact anyway). But he only gained 1 lb 3 oz between 6 and 9 months which is a slower rate than when he was younger.

  • It didn't happen with our kids, but I make skinny kids. However, good friends of ours have a little girl who was really high in percentiles for weight and height until 6 or 7 months, then she started moving and she basically gained about a pound between 6 months and a year. She is around the 50th percentile now at 17 months and has been there for awhile. When they get active, growth can slow way down, especially if they were chubbier to begin with. Try not to worry!

  • I think it is pretty normal. We found out at Nora's 9 month appointment that she had dropped from about the 50% for weight to the 20%. She is 95% for height, so she is really long and lean. But the doctor was not worried that her weight slowed so much.

  • Growth slows down but the charts reflect this, so I don't know why she'd drop percentiles and whether you should be concerned.

ETA: just read the rest of the posts and I'm totally not helpful, sorry. But if she's still 50-something percentile, I wouldn't be worried yet. And as for height, is there a possibility she was mis-measured? My friend's LO "shrunk" 2 inches onces, but it was because the earlier measurement was screwy and way high.

  • Nothing to worry about. Growth does slow way down after 6 months. On average, they only grow 0.5" per month from 6-12 months old. Then it slows down even more.

For weight gain, it definitely slows down once they are mobile. I'm not sure on stats for formula fed babies, but I know the average breastfed baby only gains 2 to 4 oz a week from 6-12 months. Sometimes even a little less.
