Feeding Solids??

I ve asked a few moms and I get different answers about whether or not I give the baby cereal with the puree food 3x a day or do I do cereal in the morning with fruit puree , afternoon just a puree then at night cereal and a puree?? Im confused!

How do you feed your lil munchkins?

Re: Feeding Solids??

  • It's really up to you. We only give cereal in the morning and sometimes a little mixed in at dinner to thicken up runny purees. Some people choose not to give any cereal at all.

  • I was just reading that you should give cereal twice a day in addition to whatever other foods because the cereal is fortified.

  • We do 1 tbsp of oatmeal in the morning mixed with 1.5-2 tbsp of fruit puree. For dinner, she gets 2oz (I think this is approximately 4 tbsp) of veggie puree...sometimes just one veggie, sometimes two mixed together. I don't do cereal more than once a day because it makes her constipated. And we're not doing three meals a day until later on.

  • We've just started introducing solids, so we're still working through all of them.  But right now we're doing 2 tbsp of cereal (oatmeal) in the morning, and 1 tbsp of cereal with 1 tbsp of veggies at dinner.  Once we get to the fruits we'll do fruit/cereal in the morning, veggie/cereal at dinner.  I just like using the cereal to make it thicker
  • I asked our dr. at my LO's 6 months visit and she said cereal in the morning and evening and then 2 - 3 servings of fruits or vegetables. So typically i do 2 tbs of cereal mixed with 1 tsp of a fruit for breakfast and then in the evening 2 tbs of cereal with 2 tbs of veggies. Our dr. also said you could ask 100 drs. and they would all say different things so to do what works best of us.
  • How in the world do all of you get your babies to eat cereal? We started with cereal as per the pedi instructed. We tried for weeks and DD would not eat it no matter how we fixed it or how hungry she was. The pedi said to try vegetables and the very first day, she gobbled it up. The only was she will eat any cereal at all is if I mix just a tiny bit in a bottle of BM. I know vegetables probably taste way better and I can see why she wouldn't want to go to cereal now, but I never thought I would have such a hard time getting her to eat cereal as her first food.

Just to be clear, I tried rice and oatmeal cereal, usually mixed with fresh BM but I also tried water, and all different consistencies.

  • No matter what we try, we can't get our little one to take ANY solids!

She absolutley does not "get" how the spoon goes in the mouth and then you swallow!  She will take "puffs" if I put them in her mouth.

  • Dumb question alert:  If you mix the cereal with the fruit or veggie, do you just put the cereal (in powdered form) right into the fruit or veggie?  Or do you mix the cereal with formula or bm or water and then add it to the fruit or veggie?

I feel so silly that I can't even remember what I did when DS was an infant.

  • I mix the cereal in with the veggies or fruit first and then decide from there whether it needs more BM or water.

I mix the oatmeal with BM first and get it to the consistency I want, then add the fruit puree.

  • My lil man started rice cereal at 4.5 months and didn't like it at first, then he started gobbling it up.  After a week and a half/two weeks he stopped liking it so much and would only eat it when he was "in the mood."  I gave up for a while b/c he was still so young.  Then I finally tried oatmeal about two weeks ago and he loves it.  I also found that he likes his oatmeal separate from his fruit, not mixed.
  • I give Logan rice cereal with fruit in the morning and rice cereal with a veggie in the evening. When I first introduce a new solid, I keep the solid separate from the rice cereal so that he is getting the full flavor. After 2 days I mix the rice cereal into the solid and add a bit of water to make it the right consistency. My doc told me to keep giving him rice cereal twice a day so that I wouldn't have to give him an iron supplement. She also recommended mixing the cereal with water so that he could get some fluoride.

  • I skipped cereal altogether when I started ds on solids, and now I give him about 2 TB of oatmeal with breakfast a few times a week. I don't do any oather cereal ever, just fruits, veggies, occasionally meat, and yogurt.
