I guess it's not really along the lines of grandparents names, but that post steered my train of thought to a topic going on in my family right now.
What do you call your inlaws?
I've sort of avoided calling them anything... I refer to them by their first name when talking to someone else, but have never called them anything to their face. Now that the relationship is dramatically improving with them, MIL has been doing some serious hinting around that she'd like for me to feel more comfortable calling her something. I was raised to not call elders by their first name, so that seems weird to call them that to their face... but "Mom and Dad" also doesn't seem right, because I have a Mom and a Dad.
Maybe I'm overthinking it! But what do you call yours?
Re: sort of s/o grandparent names... what you call your ILs
I call them by their first names--also don't want to call them Mom & Dad since they aren't. I called them "Mr. and Mrs.___" when I first knew them (a LONG time ago) but I know they don't want that now.
Is there a way you could ask without it feeling too awkward?
either nothing, or Grandma and grandpa
Haha yup that's what I do! Apparently MIL has taken notice and has made some side comments.
She seems to be leaving it up to me but I also know that she calls her MIL "Mom" even though she can't stand her and when he was alive, she called her FIL "Pop". I think FIL did the same thing when MIL's parents were living.
I'll be the odd duck.... I call them Mom and Dad when it's just us and them. But in HS, I called the parents of my best friends Mom and Dad too...
When all grandparents are together, I'll use their first names, or just Gran and Papa
Samesies.
