Babies: 6 - 9 Months

stage 1 vs stage 2 foods

What is the difference? I was at Target today looking at baby foods and stage1 &2 foods looked almost the same. I know there was some stage 2's that were mixed.

My baby is 6m in a couple days and has only had veggies. So can I just get like the apples & carrorts for him to try apples?

Re: stage 1 vs stage 2 foods

  • If your baby can sit up on his own then stage two foods are fine. I tried all the stage one foods to make sure my DD did not have an allergic reaction then gave her stage two. I also think they are just larger serving sizes. When I went to see my doctor for her 6 month shots she said that stage two was fine and to give her some water in a sippy cup.

I think that plain stage 2 foods like apples are the same as stage one just larger and thicker.

  • Stage 2 is a little thicker/chunkier than the watery Stage 1. Also, the jars are bigger. Yes, you can give him apples&carrots if he's already had carrots.
  • You can but if you go to a grocery store you may be able to find a larger variety. At Meijer and Wal-Mart they have plain apples in stage 2. Maybe a different brand?

We are fine with Jay trying something new mixed in with other foods. I think they do it because they are less worried about allergies when by the time you start stage 2's. Or they assume you have already tried everything.

  • I give my DS Earth's Best and for their stage 2 it is thicker but also the different foods are mixed.  They do not have just 1 flavor in stage 2.  The stage 1 is smaller jars and just 1 single flavor, I guess like the PP said, to ensure no allergies.  All of the Stage 2's are larger and the fruits are like Pears and Mangos, or Raspberries, Peaches, and Bananas.  They have also introduced the meats.  There is Chicken and Brown Rice or Chicken and Sweet Potatoes.  My DS is averaging about 2 jars a "meal" so almost 5-6 jars a day.  He is a porker though :-)  We are also introducing real food, so instead of getting apples we use natural, sugar free, apple sauce, and we crush bananas to give him with his cereal.  We also just introduced the Gerber Puffs.  There isn't much he doesn't like so far :-)
