DS is refusing to eat

Hi ladies! Just wondering if anyone has tips on how to get DS to start eating again. He had a little bit of a stomach bug last Fri night, he threw up 2 times, so I can understand him not eating much Sat. But he hasn't really eaten much Sun or Mon either. He still nurses and he only added in 1 nursing session. Yesterday he wouldn't eat any oatmeal, which is his usual breakfast and he eats about 1/2 cup, he had a couple bites here and there of whatever I could get him to eat and 1 whole yogurt around lunch time. Today he has had a couple sips of smoothie and maybe 5 bites of cereal..... ideas??

Re: DS is refusing to eat

  • I would just keep offering. DS was really sick over Christmas last year, and he barely ate for like 10 days. It was horrible, but there is not a whole lot you can do. I'd just try to give him Pedialite if you feel like he is getting dehydrated (and will take it). You can also try giving him probiotics to see if that helps any tummy issues. Hopefully he's back to his normal self soon :)

  • DS is like this pretty much anytime he gets a tooth..it probably is a little bit of stomach bug leftover but maybe look out for some teeth!

  • My daughter just had a stomach bug last week and it took her about 3 days to get back to eating normally again. We just kept offering mild things like toast, bananas, applesauce, etc for 2 days and then after that just offered normal stuff which she mostly refused but then she was back to normal.

Most important is probably just to stay hydrated which it sounds like he's doing okay with!

  • Pretty much what the pp said. DD was sick last year with a stomach flu and it took her about 2 weeks to get back to normal. While adults usually feel better a couple days after being ill, young children take much longer.

The ER doctor warned us her appetite would be diminished for a while and suggested we give her juice and Gatorade (he even suggested candy which we politely ignored) after she stopped vomiting. The empty calories prevent them from losing too much weight and keeps their energy up. We're not a juice drinking family but I did take his advice and DD barely lost 1/2 a lb during the two weeks she was on an eating strike.

  • I agree with just keep offering.  When DS was sick the ER doctor and our pedi both said not to worry about eating -- as long as he is drinking.

I threw nutrition out the window during that time and just offered up his favorites.  Apple sauce, grapes and strawberries, yogurt, eggs ect... basically things I knew he loved to eat.  It was still a challange and I knew if he was refusing applesauce and grapes he really had no appetite - LOL.  anyway -- just keep offering every so often and keep him hydrated.  I'm sure it will pass very soon.  DS was not eating normally for about a week.

  • The fact he's nursing is great, and I wouldn't worry too much. We have success with the Naked brand juice purees mixed with water or yogurt if DS1 won't eat bc he's been sick.

  • We are going through this right now. He will still eat blueberries, so he is getting more than normal of those. He still nurses but we added in about 4 oz of pediasure too. Also have given him some empty calorie foods in the past few days to avoid too much weight loss. Empty calorie foods were butter cookies, tortilla chips, and a piece of chocolate. I'm scared he's going to be like, "what IS this wonderful stuff?!" and not go back to regular fruits and veggies.
