I just caught the hind end of a news piece about phasing out self check kiosks at store. Why?! These things make my trip to Krogers much less frustrating.
I saw a similar story a few weeks ago. I think people are stealing more (which I don't understand! The thing yells at you if you forget to move an item or if the weight is off- and a manager will come "help" and make you feel like an idiot!!)

I like to think it's because they're trying to stop old people from taking 52 hours at the self-checkout, but I bet it's because people lie about the produce they have. If they start phasing them out at my grocery store, I'll cry like DS before he gets put down for a nap.
They found out about "peppergate" on the nest. j/k
Some chick a couple years back admitted that she rang up red peppers as green peppers so they were cheaper. Lots of people ring nearly all produce as bananas so they only pay around 29 cents per pound.
I like that they are getting rid of them so that brings in another couple employees for the company.

I hate self-checkouts. The ones here at Giant Eagle take about twice as long as having a cashier do it. You have to call for help every third item or so. And no, it's not because of user error. I worked as a cashier in high school and still remember most of the produce codes.

I used to run a front end for Albertsons. They are getting rid of them as well.
There are a couple of reasons: theft, maintenance costs (arm and a leg to keep those things running), perceived lack of customer service, and for those stores that still do them, enhanced opportunity for carry out service.
When they first took some out in Texas, they seriously had people leaving carts full of stuff in the aisles and walking out. Because they couldn't steal their groceries anymore. It was insane. They had to schedule 2 or 3 extra folks just to do returns!
I love SCOTs as a customer, I know my produce codes better than most cashiers, so it takes me way less time to use them. But I usually get stuck behind some idiot who doesn't know what to do, takes all day or keeps taking stuff off the scale and wondering why the bagging alert goes off.
I always assume if there are any camera's in the store, that they are watching the self check out. I am not ballsy enough to steal like that. People are crazy.
Also, PP said 29 cents a pound for banana's? Dang!! I've seen it down to 59 cents here.
I never even thought about people putting in different produce items that were cheaper, how sneaky! That sucks they are getting rid of them, I love going through self checkout.
I thought the story I heard said humans were actually faster/more efficient. I believe this because as slow as our Wal Mart lines are, the self checkout got ridiculous when people brought up a cartful.
I was a bit sad when they took ours out though, because it was nice for when we ran in to get just a couple things.
Re: Why are they trying to phase our self checkouts?
I love self checkout!!
I also love to use the joke every time "self checkout, okay...::looks self up and down:: DAAAAMN self looking good."

I would laugh every time. Let's go grocery shopping together!

Deal! I laugh every time so it would work out.
