You usually have to ask for the wrap -- I did and it was great -- helped me think my insides weren't falling out and gave more support for me when I got up, etc. I wore for about 3 weeks post partum!
Now, for baby #2 I have learned about diastis and when a number it does on you if you do not properly work to get your abs close together again. This website explains it all!
She is the only lady I have been recommended by multiple fitness people and drs. I plan to order her wraps and wear 6 weeks post partum but I already have the book, "Lose your mummy tummy" so I can start immediately after my c-section!
I bought the belly bandit, but after my unplanned c-section my doctor told me not to use it. Apparently they can interfere with healing. For me it turned out to be a complete waste of money.
You don't *need* to buy a support belt because you can ask for one at the hospital. However, they can be expensive at the hospital as well, so if you're going to have to pay for any of it out of pocket keep that in mind.
The concerns with the support belts and healing is that excessive compression could cause scar tissue growth between your uterus and other organs nearby. It is still safe as long as you're not wearing it for too long, or wearing it extremely tight. You shouldn't be wearing it 24/7 either.
Check with your own doctor, but in most cases it's perfectly fine to use one.
