Susannah?

OK, so it's a week from my due date and we are set on our boy name (Patrick Oliver) but still haven't picked a girl name yet...AAAHHH!  For the last few months our frontrunners have been Meredith and Tierney, but I just can't seem to get behind one or the other 100%.  And DH has convinced himself it's a boy and he doesn't care about the girl's name, so he's not much help.

Anyone have thoughts on Susannah?  It just popped in my head today out of the blue.  I am not a big fan of nicknames in general, but it seems like it would really be a mouthful to say Susannah all the time...any thoughts for cute NNs?  I don't like Susie or Sue.

Name would probably be Susannah Cosette.

Re: Susannah?

  • I love Susannah!....but you probably should use it if you don't like Sue or Susie. Personally I think Susie is the cutest.

  • I LOVE Susannah! I think Anna or Annie would be acceptable nicknames.

I'm not a fan of Meredith or Tierney.

  • I love Susannah.  I used to know a Susanna that went by Zanna as a nn.

  • I like Meredith better than Susannah and you avoid the sue, or suzie nicknames..

how do you pronounce Tierney.  (Tearney?)

  • I love it!  And I also love Meredith.
  • I'm a Suzanne and I love my name.  I was Suzie growing up but made the switch to Suzanne in college... it was an easy transition.  And if you don't want a nickname, you simply call your daughter Susannah.  Most people aren't that dumb that they can't figure that out.

I think it's a lovely, classic name!  And these days, it's more unusual than Meredith.

  • Love it!  She could be Zan, for a nn.

  • Zan for nn and I think the name is great! :)

  • Love it! I've always liked it better with a "z" in the middle...but I'm not a spelling freak.

I used to watch a little girl named "Suzanna". I always thought it was adorable. Her dad always called her "Sunny" but I think that was just between them... Everyone else stickly called her "Suzanna". I like Suzy and Annie.

Meredith has always been a pretty name...but stuffy to me. And I like Tierney...but the only Tierney I've ever met is a super pierced tattoo artist and I can't get that out of my head. It seems artsy and trendy now.

  • Wow, rave reviews!  Thanks for your input everyone, I kind of like Zannah for a nickname.  As someone who got stuck with a little kid's nickname into adulthood, I'm pretty opposed to "set" nicknames.  But it seems like it might be nice to have an informal alternative to something so long.
  • LOVE the name.  I know a Susa (SOO-za) -- another potentially nice nn.
  • Our Susannah is just Susannah (not Sue or Susie)! I am not a nickname person, and t has not been a problem at all. We occasionally have people sing the annoying song "Oh Susannah" to her though.

  • Oh, and I will also add that the name DD gets mistakenly called often is "Savannah." ALL THE TIME. At least twice a week. Acquaintances are constantly asking how Savannah is doing, even her teacher at Little Gym just can't seem to get that it is Susannah not Savannah. So, if this would bother you, I would really consider going with one of your other choices.

I love Meredith too by the way! GL with your decision.

  • All I can think of is the song, "Oh Susannah", when I hear that name. Sorry. :S

Meredith is the newest name to be added to my shortlist. It's really out of character for me to choose a more traditional name like that...but I love that a nn could be Meri.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • "I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee..." Not a fan of Susanna, especially if you don't like the Susie nn. I'd stick with Meredith and call her Merry

  • That's DD's MN and I love it.  (Spanish spelling after a family member, but pronounced basically the same.)   It was almost her FN but we were didn't like Sue/Susie as nicknames.  Sometimes I wish we'd gone ahead and used it because it's beautiful and uncommon right now.

  • Love the name Susannah!! I have a good friend whose name is Susanna and she is awesome. People shortened her name to Suze sometimes but most of the time she just went by Susanna. (I like the spelling of SusannaH with the H at the end, for sure!)

Good choice! Where did you come up with Cosette?
