Sleeping with a blanket?

I know sleeping young babies with loose blankets is not recommended, but at what age is it okay? My LO is still sleeping in her halo sleep sack and starting to get too long for it. I think they make them in larger sizes, but I'm wondering when it's safe to let her sleep with a blanket? She's going to be 7 months on Oct 7th.

Re: Sleeping with a blanket?

  • L sleeps with a knit blanket. I am sure he would be fine with a regular, light weight one, but it being knit makes me feel better about it.

  • K has a knitted blanket too(actually she has tons). I use a big one and fold it twice. It keeps her warm and I think the weight is comforting. It's also light enough that she can push it off her (and has). She has pulled it over her face but has pushed it right back down. Even if she didn't, it's a loose knit so I'm not worried about her breathing.

  • I think it just depends on your baby and their sleep habits. I was letting A sleep with a blanket until I came in one morning and he had it wrapped around his head and neck. He moves too much in his sleep and just winds it around and around. I'm not worried as much about suffocation as strangulation. We got a Cater's Just One You sleeper-gown at Target in 6 - 12 months that fits my 29" 8 month old with room to grow.

  • I read recently that it's ok to start leaving a lovey in the crib at 7 months, so I assume the same would go for a blanket?  We have the Aden + Anais sleep sacks and they're really easy and soft but once DD grows out of them I agree that it would be better to use a blanket.  The only reason I'm not sure I will is that DD is all over her crib while she's sleeping!

DD wound her Aden & Anais swaddle blanket around her body one night. I was into panic when I saw that. It was our last night of swaddling. She still wakes if she moves too much so I use firm leg pillows to deter her. She can still move but it takes more effort.

Agreed. My LO kicks a blanket off in about 10 seconds. He is also all over the crib all night. We bought a bigger Halo Early Walker sleep sack for winter. He hates regular sleep sacks because he can't stand in the crib easily in them, but this should help that.
