LO is sick don't know if I should take him to the dr??

Ok I won't give you the whole background story but Oliver was born 3 months early and has lung issues he is more suseptable to illnesses because of it and often times they end up worse than they should be. So far he has had a low grade fever, runny nose that I can hardly keep up with and his snot is yellow, he was coughing last night and couldn't sleep well because he couldn't breath. He is crankier than normal. I have given him benedryl but it doesn't seem to help at all. I don't have the money to spend on gas or the dr if it's just a cold and there is nothing I can do but if its something more like RSV which is my big fear :( then I need to take him in and see what they say. So suggestions??

  • DS' pulmonologist said to bring him in to the pedi if he gets like that, because it can escalate into status asthmaticus quickly. Hope your LO feels better. How old is he?

  • With yellow snot, I usually take the boys in.  Because he is a premiee our docs always said to bring them in.  RSV is nothing to mess with.  Is he getting the vax for it?
  • Thanks for the advice. He will be 2 in December He is going to get the vax for RSV but we haven't started them yet. Even when he was on the shots last year he got RSV and this is how it started runny nose I couldn't control fussy and then started the bad cough....
  • Matthew had RSV at 15 months. They wouldn't do the shots after the 1st winter for them.  It was HORRIBLE!
  • Our pulmo would want to see LA if she had the same symptoms.  In fact, she is there with DH as we speak.  We skip the pedi for colds now and go straight to pulmo.

  • You know I love our pulmo but one of the ppl in the office is a little rude and I skipped the pedi and went to him like he said and she asked why was I there I need to go to the pedi for colds. So now I never know :(. But we are going in a few hours they called me back at the pedi and said they want to see him
  • I know about the "office" people.  They can be the annoying red tape you have to get past.  Today, DH called the pulmo to get LA in for a sick appointment and the scheduler suggested he call the pedi.  He informed her that we have been down this road before and that we needed to see the pulmo.  Sigh...just let us see the doctor already!
  • Called for the same reason today. I just state the whole situation before they can question it: "DS has asthma and his pulmonologist wants him to be seen right away when he has a fever, as infections are his trigger."

Not ready for cold and flu season. We actually had a peaceful patch there. Ah, well.
