I really love the name Alexander. However, my brother in laws girlfriend is named Alex (Alexandra). They've been together 4 1/2 years. So if they got married there would be 2 Alex Bernings very close together in the same family if we also used Alex. should I forget about the name? I love it but am not sure what to think.

Re: 2 names in same family? alexander
I would still use the name...one is Alexandra and the other is Alexander
I wouldn't care they are different so I would use it. Plus just becuase they have been together for so long doesn't mean they will get married. If they do split and you name your lo something different you will always regret it.
I don't think its a big deal, and I love the name Alexander
DH has 2 uncles named Alexandru (romanian) and we still named our son Alexander. Their nicknames are Sandu and Sanduco. We call our son Sparky, which is another story altogether, but he will eventually turn in to Alex, because I just can't stomach Xander and Lex sounds more like a girl than Lex Luther
Keep it. You would most likely have the first Alexandra Bernings :-)

Go for it. My family has 4 Steven/Stephens, 3 Davids, an Ella and a Gabriella, a Josephine and a Josie, 2 Sophias and 4 Elenas.
If you really love Alexander that much, you should use it.
Go for it! If you love the name, use it
If DH and I have a girl we are going to (hopefully) name her Rachael and his first cousin is also named Rachael, but different last names and living 2,000 miles apart (only seeing each other at holidays).
This. Plus, if you like her, she may think it's a compliment to her!
Ugh. And I disagree.
One side of my family has: 3 Christophers, 2 Lornes, a Michelle & a Rochelle. This led to much confusion over the years...perhaps because I'm the Michelle and family gatherings were always confusing because I always thought my name was being called out when it was my little cousin's. Also, she's a lot younger so often her name was being called out urgently for her to "not do something" or for her to "come here". Perhaps that was my problem with it more than anything.
On the other side of my family there were two Marlenes (one was my mother, the other an aunt). Both married into the family and were close in age. As an outsider it was easy to differentiate between the two of them, probably because one was mom to me (however, they also had the same surname).
Still, if you LOVE it, use it!
