Parenting after a Loss

Ummm...my new camera is SO much smarter then I am...

I've read the reviews.  I know it takes good pictures...I just can't figure out how.  There's gotta be a 'Picture Taking for Dummies' book out there, right?  The only thing I've really been able to figure out so far is that 1) I should by a new/better lens and 2) I can't rely on the Auto setting like I have with past cameras.  The rest is still up in the air.

  • What type of camera do you have? I have the Canon Rebel t2i, and I really like it, but there is definitely a learning curve!

I did the two peas tutorial and I really liked it. I haven't gotten all the way through it, but even just doing the first 4 - 6 weeks really helped me.

My next step is to take some non-credit photography classes at our local community college.

  • OOOhhh...that was my other choice in camera.  I debated back and forth and in the end went with the Nikon D5100.  Sure enough, the one thing they told me about in the store is the one thing I'm struggling with. Apparently the Canon shoots a brighter picture and it is the darkness of the Nikon that's killin me right now.  I read a TON of reviews on both and nobody had anything negative to say about either of them so I just rolled the dice.

I will definitely check out the website...thanks for the link.  I think I should take a class too.  I was way into photography in hs (even a photographer for the yearbook...I know, super cool, right?) but that was a looong time ago and I;m so out of practice.  I just wish I was as good at is as I think I am Wink

  • We recently bought the Nikon 3100 package from Costco, and it came with a book called Digital Photography for Dummies or something.  It's not very big, so I'm sure it's not too expensive.  I'm sure Amazon has it.

  • When I was in vet school, a resident told me about the "10% rule".  He said you have to be 10% smarter than the object you're trying to manipulate in order to make it work.  Hee hee.  I totally fail this rule close to 100% of the time.  ;)
