Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Im so tired of dealing with ds's issues....

frustrating beyond frustrating!

The allergy testing all came back negative.  I guess he still could have an
"intolerance" to milk and soy so were staying on the special formula.

He did a little better this week and I really thought it was on the mend and then the last 3 days, its gone back downhill.

Im starting to feel crazy, if my mom wanst here with me I'd think I was imagining this or making it up. My son is screaming at the top of his lungs and seems to be in some pain! But, why or why is it only at night? If he truly had something really wrong wouldnt it be in the day too?  Is there anyone else on here with the same thing? How hard does you baby cry if they are in pain?

I have even started giving him some motrin thinking that would help and nothing.

I just am clueless. I spend all my days and nights researching reflux and mspi and trying to figure out what is causing this.

I just dont get it....blah

(Oh and dh still hasnt called, but I talked to his coworker who is here in the states and she said she would check on this for me if I havent heard from him in the next 2 days. She assured me he probably fine and things just happen over there)

  • I'm dealing with a mystery issue also.  My son has had congestion for at least 2 months and i'm suspecting a milk allergy.  It is very frustrating to not be able to help our babies feel better.

Have you had his ears checked?  could it be gas?  Maybe teething?

  • I have no idea what could be going on with your DS. I just want to say that I am so sorry that you are dealing with all of this, I can not imagine. I would definitely get some second opinions about your DS. Good Luck and I hope you get some answers about your baby and your husband soon! Hang in there

so sorry you're dealing with stuff too. Its so hard to not know what is wrong.

I have not had his ears checked but no fever so I doubt an infection.

Gas....yes for sure. He passes gas a lot but we do gripe water, gas drops, colic calm, massage, warm pack on tummy.  Nothing helps.

and teething I dont think its that because he has always b een like this, since birth.

  • Definitely get his ears checked. DD never gets fevers when she's sick, even when she has ear infections.

  • If he's dealing with tummy issues and reflux, have you tried Nexium?  After dealing with reflux issues with her DS for months, a friend of mine finally convinced her doctor to prescribe it and once it started working it was like he was a different baby.  He only had to take it for a few months then she was able to take him off it.  She had tried everything as well and was at the end of her rope. Her DS was constantly in pain until he got on the Nexium.  Might be worth a try if you haven't tried it already?

  • I am so sorry Sarah. I can't imagine, when Molls colic finally ended it was a gift. Hers was only at night though, the clock struck 7pm and she would scream like she was on fire 'til 5am. Every night.  They never found anything.

Have you tried a chiropractor or shiatsu? I've heard really good things about both to help. Molls was having awful stomach and gas pains when I was in NY and straining and screaming. My aunt gave her a treatment (she is a shiatsu therapist) and Molls was able to poop and was pain free within 15 mins.

Best of luck! I hope you here from your H soon too.

  • my son was waking up at night screaming for almost an hour nightly for weeks and wouldn't go back to sleep unless I nursed him. one night he screamed bloody murder for over an hour and I did our usual ten minute ferber checks but he wouldn't stop till I nunursed. (we've done ferber since 4.5 months). he was sleeping in a pack n play in our bedroom because we live in an apartment and an old man's bedroom is on the other side of the nursery and he complains about the noise. anyway, I too thought he had a medical issue like gas or teething but doubted it because he wouldn't scream like that during the day. I asked the pedi and she said it was because he was sleeping in our room, knew we were right there despite hiding under our covers :) and wanted to be picked up/nursed and me continuing so was encouraging it so to stop going in. she said the constant screaming was akin to the terrible twos and normal and a good sign developmentally. so we bit the bullet and moved him into his nursery last week. it has gone well; most days he doesn't wake up but if he does he cries for ten minutes and goes back to sleep. I haven't had to go in yet. maybe try letting him cry for a bit and not going in, or doing intervals, depending on your sleep training method. good luck!

  • This sounds like my DD for the first few months. She would scream all night from like 4 pm till 2 am when we would both pass out from exhaustion in the recliner. I took her to the pedi numerous times and they said it was colic there was nothing we could do...blah blah blah. I changed her to the Nutramigen formula and she was amillion times better in 24 hours. She still has "spells" every once in a while, especially depending on what kind of food shes eating. I can tell when its tummy troubles because she always pulls her legs up to her chest.

If shes having tummy troubles I lay her on her back and massage her belly from the belly button down, with a little pressure to help things get moving. It makes a huge difference. Has you LO ever been on an anti-reflux medicine? It wouldn't hurt to try it!

he is on previcid, and neocate formula (step up from nutramagin). He has been on zantac, axid  previously and those did not work.

Im glad you found relief for your LO!

  • Sarah, I'm so sorry you're still dealing with these issues. Has the GI given you any ideas now that the allergy test came back negative? Like an upper endoscopy? How is the prevacid working? DS just switched from prilosec to prevacid a few days ago, and I've actually noticed more nighttime fussiness. Errg.

  • I have a few ideas that may or may not be helpful...The crying only at night sounds like it could possibly be teething related.  I have read that babies are able to withstand the irritation/pain of teething when they are distracted during the day, but then often are fussy or in pain at night.  So that's one possibility.  The other is that he might be constipated/gassy?  My DD has been extremely fussy at night, flailing around and fussing all night long, if she is constipated or super gassy (or a combo).  Usually we'll give her an ounce of prune juice or a jar of prunes and that'll clear it up the next day. The third possibility - maybe all of the special formula/dietary restrictions are actually not helping?  My DD also had major GI issues for the first 6 months (when she was EBF) - blood in her stools, mucousy and green poops, all the classic signs of MSPI and she had reflux as well.  She went on Zantac, which did not seem to help much, and I cut out all dairy and soy (and a ton of random things like tomatoes, spinach, or anything else I thought could be a problem) for 4 months.  Still no better, still blood in her stools, still fussy, still mucousy poops.  I was driving myself insane trying to figure out what the problem was.  When we started formula, instead of doing the Alimentium or Neocate, we just used the regular Similac Advance and her poops became normal.  She was less fussy and seemed to grow out of her reflux issues.  I know other babies who have had gas issues with the regular formula, but do better with the organic kind (not sure if it's legit, but that's what I've heard) and Dr. Brown's bottles. So has DS ever been on "regular" formula?  For DD at least, it seemed like all the special diet stuff and medication seemed to be counterproductive.  So I don't know if you have done a lot of trial and error with the formula, but maybe it's worth a shot?
