Yesterday I put the crib mattress pad and fitted sheet on, and it was really difficult, I couldn't reach my hands very far through the slats since they're so close for safety, the only way I could get the things on was to just lift the entire mattress out and put them on that way.
Is it really this big of a PITA or am I not doing it right? I anticipate having to change the sheets very frequently, so I am hoping there's some trick I'm not getting.
Re: Is putting on crib sheets supposed to be so hard or am I doing it wrong?
I have heard they are a PITA to change...and sometimes rip in the corners. Someone posted a thread about advice, and someone mentioned putting on a mattress pad, then crib sheet, then mattress pad, then crib sheet. That way for those middle of the night blow outs you only have to strip the top sheet and mattress pad and you're set.

OOPS! Apparently I was logged in to my old account that was frozen! FYI this comment was from me! Sorry!
I have the double set of pads and sheets on mine as well (just watch that it doesn't get too cushy...suffocation hazard).
To get them on I've found tipping the mattress to help.
Word of advice for ladies who haven't ordered a mattress yet: Get a light but firm one!

We got The Ultimate Crib Sheet: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3763008&prodFindSrc=search
It is waterproof and ties on the the crib over the crib sheet. I figured that it would be much easier to just untie and retie a new one in the middle of the night rather than worrying about taking the sheet and mattress pad off and putting new ones on and struggling with the mattress every time. You still see the pretty sheet underneath from the side.
ETA: I just looked at mine and apparently they snap, they don't tie... even easier!

It was painful especially with the bump in the way, so DH took the entire mattress out and it was much easier. The mattress is not heavy, so I will probably take it out everytime I change the sheets. I also really like the doubling up on sheet on the mattress to speed things up.
It's a little easier without the bump, but not much. I always end up lifting up one end of the mattress and then the other.
We had these things when DS was very young, one by his head (spit up) and one by his tush (diaper fiasco): https://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_024W029473960001P?vName=Baby&cName=Bedding&sName=Sheets&sid=KDx01192011x000001&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=22-172059702-2.
They are much easier to swap out than the entire crib sheet. In fact, I think I wound up changing the actual sheet very rarely. GL.
