C-sections

what is the earliest i can get discharged?

with my first C-sect. I was there the full 5 days.  my son was in the NICU so i was fine w/ being there w/ him, they actually had to beg me to leave! LOL.

this time around, if there are no complications, i would love to leave earlier.  my c-sect. is next Friday at 7am, so i'm not sure if that is counted as a full day. i'm thinking probably no earlier than monday morning, but i'm not sure.  i know it all depends on my hospital policy and i will ask my OB on Thurs. at my appt., just curious what others have been allowed to do.  thanks!

Re: what is the earliest i can get discharged?

  • You'll have to factor in both your needs, and the needs of the baby and what the pedi thinks.

My doctors would have let me go home a day and a half after the birth. She was born late evening on the 23rd, and they would have discharged me on the morning of the 25th, since it was Christmas Day. Honestly, we thought about it, but given that the by and large prefered we and baby wait 24 more hours, that's what we did. Had we left so soon baby would have needed to be check at the pedi the next day and I would have needed to go back for a visit, and it didn't seem worth it to have to make 2 doc trips the next day.

  • My OB said since my c-section is in the morning it would count as a day. She also said discharge would depend on how well we were doing, if I was taking meds orally, how well I was moving around, if I had already gone to the bathroom. I think that's it.

  • The hospital I work at will let c-section mama's leave after anywhere between 2-4 nights...so in your case, you could go home Sunday AM if it's the same policy
  • My CS is Friday morning as well, and I'm pretty confident I'll be going home Monday morning/early afternoon.  That's when the Dr. said she anticipated me going home.

  • As everything was fine with both LO and myself, we were allowed to leave anywhere from 48 - 72 hours after the surgery.  I had my section at 11-ish am on Friday and we left at 1pm on Sunday because I didn't choose to stay the extra day.

  • We would have gone home 48 hours after, but LO had some complications and we had to stay longer. I think my hospital's policy is 48-72 hours after the c-section unless there are complications.

  • I had mine Thursday at 3pm. I was told I could go home Saturday if I wanted, but that she recommended the extra day. DS ended up being jaundiced and couldn't have left then anyway so we just stayed until the end of Sunday. I'll probably feel much differently with another baby at home, but I was not ready to leave on Saturday!

  • Where I worked we discharged c/s patients at 48-72 hours.  I stayed for almost 96 hours after mine because the babies were in NICU.  I definitely could have gone sooner though.
  • I'm having a RCS.  LO may be in the NICU at another hospital (long story), and my OB said 24 hours after surgery if that was the case. Just depends on the mom and baby usually!

  • If there are no complications with you or the baby, my hospital's policy is three days.

My water broke Monday night, I had DD Tues aft noon, and I left Fri at noon.

  • I was admitted Mon am and left Thurs AM with my planned c/s for DD.  I could have left a day earlier, but the Peds asked me not to b/c she had jaundice.  4 days is usually standard, some women like to go home after 3.

  • my c-section was at night (friday) and i left monday morning.
