We went for a second opinion at the children's hospital of philly. DS has staring spells whenre he is unresponsive and very spaced out. Our original neurologist did 3 eegs (30 mins, 48 hrs in hospital, and 96 hours at home) all normal and said he is fine. At the second opinon they did a 20 minute eeg and the doc said it was not completely normal?? He was wide awake/fussy/eating a lolipop/watching a show etc. yet there was a part of his brain that showed brain waves like he was falling asleep. SHe said there was no seizure activity but if there are seziures they would be partial complex seizures. She wants to see if more of that activity shows up. The original doctor said absence seizures but then said he may just have severe reflux. So...with 2 totally different opinons I am frustrated. the children's hospital wants us to get a 24 video eeg in the hospital to see what is actually going on (already scheduled)
Has anyone had that type of brain activity and had very different opinions?
Re: 3 normal eegs...4th "not completely normal"?
Right now EEG's are frustrating us too. Neuro was so sure that Peyton's spasms were a type of seizure, but when she was in the hospital a neuro saw them and said no, it's just her CP. (she's never really had spasms before).
Then she started doing this weird mouth/face stuff, so again they were sure it was focal point seizures (pedi, too) but her EEG was normal. She actually did it DURING her EEG and it was still normal.
Her last EEG was normal and she had a grand mal.
I'm losing hope in EEG's!
I'm sorry you're getting conflicting information, hopefully the 24 hour shows something definitive.

Maura is the opposite...3 abnormals EEGs and the 4th, the normal one, literally fell in the middle of a week of breakthrough seizures...go figure!
CHOP is a great place. I'd trust in them. They try to get to the bottom of the problem. They'll hunt until they find an answer or hit a dead end...we hit the dead end
but my neurologist (Dr. Narula) is amazing. She emails us back night and day, weekends and holidays...we are very pleased with Maura's care there.
And hey, the 9th floor of Neurology isn't such a bad place....just visit the 8th floor for snacks and the like
Thanks! I needed some encouragement!
