Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What can a baby take for a cold?

Poor little man has a terrible cold :( It is just aweful. His nose is like a faucet, he wakes up with goop in his eyes and the worst part of it all was he cried all night :( Not nonstop, not awake, just sleeping in his crib every now and again he would start crying. It breaks my heart!

We've been sucking boogers out of his nose and I put some vicks baby rub on him before bed.

Since its Sunday, do I call the on-call dr. to see what kind of cold medicine he should take? Or talk to the pharmacist?

  • Try a humidifier with some of the vicks vapor steam in it.  That usually helps my little one when she is congested.  Hope he feels better soon!

  • I do acetaminophen if LO seems really uncomfortable too, but otherwise you can't do cold meds for kids under 5 or something like that.  Humidifier and sucking the snot are your best bets.  DD had this two weeks ago and it was rough b/c she couldn't even nurse.  Hope your LO feels better soon!

  • Vick's makes a baby rub.  I'm considering getting some.  I have no idea if it works or not though!

Yep vicks makes a baby rub. Its not as strong smelling as regular vicks. I love it.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure if there was a cold medicine for a baby or not. I do have a cool mist vaporizer so I will have to get that running today.

  • Yep and I just put the Vicks on their feet (if covered and they don't put feet in their mouth) vs. their chest b/c of breathing issues.

He can't take any. Saline drops and a bulb aspirator for his nose.
This. I don't think kids can take cold medicine under age five, or something like that.

This. And that is what we were told by our pedi when Jay had a really bad caugh. The only time they will give LO anything is if it developes into some type of infection.

  • Saline drops, nasal aspirator, humidifier, and lots of snuggles.  Oh, and Tylenol if LO is feverish and/or seems to be in pain.  That's about all you can do.  I know it sucks.

  • My pedi says we can give 1/2tsp of childrens benadryl at night. It helps dry up mucous and it has the added benefit of making them drowsy. That along with saline drops and the aspirator. We can't incline DD matress because she takes that as an invite to sit up and play all night. GL!

  • My little man is sick now. I have the cool mist humidifier going, vicks baby rub on him, I'm using saline drops and the nosefrida every few hours. But my favorite thing is the plug in made by PediaCare called Gentle Vapors! It lasts all night!

  • I agree with the other posters that a baby should not be taking anything for a cold. A humidifier, peppermint oil, extra loves and the like is all an infant should take for a cold! GL.
