Hi Ladies-
We are not sure exactly how we are going to be placed with our LO. We may meet a birth mother a couple months before the delivery, or it may be at the hospital after the delivery. So, because of this, I have no idea how many little clothes I will need.My friends plan to have a shower for us when baby is about 3 weeks old. Any ideas/lists that you would be willing to share? Thanks
~Jenn
Re: How many clothes will we need/should be buy?
clothes wise the only thing i really used (while at the hotel for 4 weeks) was:
long sleeve side snap shirts, socks that actually stay on, and aden +anais swaddle blankets (i now have 12 of these - love). note that i hated: gowns and footie sleepers (just more work when changing the dips.
yes have a couple of cute outfits for going out (and you will - that hotel room gets really small)...but the above is what P wore the rest of the time.
I would buy very very little.
Well, that depends. Are you on the front end of the curve of friends having babies or the back end?
Because we were among the last, we got a TON of hand-me-down clothes. I had an entire tub of 0-3 and 3-6 that I never even unpacked, because we had so much.
What you'll really need to buy are the bigger sides 6-12, 12+ etc, because those are sizes that are harder to pass down (if I send to daycare in an outfit, it gets stained) and people don't gift those sizes as often. But you don't want to go out and buy those sizes till you know in which season your baby will be born.
So all of that said, I would get some gender neutral sleepers and onesies and I second the A+A swaddle blankets. They're the best and they come in a 4-pack, which is all you'll need.
You really don't need many clothes at all. We were in the same situation where the shower was when he was a few weeks old, so we needed to buy the necessities. We had probably about 10 onesies, and since it was late May in a warm area, that's all he wore. If it's going to be cold when the baby is born, you'll want something like this to go over clothes - https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2317880
If I were planning for a baby during colder months, I'd probably do 5 one piece outfits like this: https://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/Gymboree/140081131?$PRODMAIN$
and then 5 long sleeve onesies with a cotton pair of pants, like this: https://s7ondemand1.scene7.com/is/image/Gymboree/17083155?$OUTFITMAIN$
and of course socks and maybe 3 hats.
Sadly, I'm already starting to forget, but I don't think we did any kind of pajamas for a while. I think for the first three months, he was just in a diaper and then swaddled.
I think that should be plenty to get you through until the shower.
I would shop smart, maybe buy one special outfit for bringing baby home, but other than that we bought about 5 newborn outfits, and several 0-3 months outfits at mostly goodwill and yard sales. She didn't "need' them exactly, but I took lots and LOTS of pictures, and the outfits she wore those first few weeks were priceless. Not necessary, but fun.
I would plan for a newborn either way. Before delivery or at the hospital shouldn't make much difference.
We didn't have a list--we just winged it. I wish we'd had more nb stuff. We were fully prepared for a baby who fit into 0-3 month clothes, and she swam in them.
If you haven't gotten a copy yet, find the latest Baby Bargains. It helps break down what you really need for a nb and provides reviews.
