Why can I not remember anything from when I was pregnant the first time??? We live on the Oregon Coast and I am craving clam chowder, safe?? Everything online contradicts itself with yeses and nos, I thought shellfish was the only thing not ok...but clams are shellfish ya??? Someone set me straight!

    This.  For reals.

The only fish I remember being off limits was high-mercury stuff like tile fish.

  • The whole "shellfish" are bad concept is bunk. Most (if not all) are low in mercury, and therefore safe. I'm trying to find more ways to include fish into my diet, and several of my choices continue to be of the shellfish variety.

    Enjoy your chowder!

I had a mini panic attack until I read your post. I had seafood alfredo for dinner last night. Aren't we just supposed to eat seafood once a week and avoid fish thats high in mercury like sword fish?

I try to have a serving of fish twice a week, and I avoid the fish that are high in mercury. Sometimes it doesn't fit into my dinner schedule, and other times it fits in perfectly. Just try to eat healthy foods on a regular basis and you'll be fine!

I highly recommend the book Feed the Belly for advice on nutrition during pregnancy. It was eye-opening and helpful (with recipes included).

  • You only need to avoid shellfish if there are red tide or other warnings in your area.... and if there are most restaurants aren't going to be serving it anyway.
  • Yeah, I was under the impression that the only thing to avoid was RAW shellfish. I thought it was fine as long as it's cooked and not high in mercury.
