Baby Names

Why did you start posting here?

I've lurked on this board for a long time and have kind of recently started posting.  I noticed that there's a really heterogeneous group of people on this board (some moms already, some TTC, some not TTC, etc.), which is great because of all of the different perspectives.

So I am bored and just got curious, why did you start posting here?  What interests you about names?

Re: Why did you start posting here?

  • i started because I like to see what other people are picking for names and what trends really are going around. I also love to see the redickulous names and tell my husband

  • I got interested in names when I started student teaching.  I've since been substitute teaching (a long term position now), and have seen/heard a vast amount of names.  I've seen awesome names, mediocre names, trendy names, and ridiculous ones.

I get to see how those names affect kids (roll call on the first day with some of those out there names, anyone?  There's ones even I can't get right sometimes, and roll call is just an insignificant example), and as bad as this sounds, sometimes I get see their parents and think "oh/ugh (depends on if the situation is negative or positive), so that's where that kid gets it."

So there's my kind of odd reason!  H and I aren't TTC for probably another two years or so (I really like my wine and vacations for now), but I'm glad to have found this board for when that time comes.  Choosing a kid's name carefully is very important, and it makes me grimace when I hear people say that "it's just a name, don't overthink it."  Also, I enjoy the brutal honesty here.  It's refreshing to me.

  • I really like the etymology of names and I find naming trends and the reasoning people have for choosing specific names to be very interesting.

I'm married, I don't have kids, we're not TTCing, but we hope to have them someday.

  • I am a name nerd too..I love hearing peoples names. I am recently married and probably wont be having any children for a year or two. I can get my baby fix on here instead of driving my husband crazy. Plus there have been lots of babies born in immediate family lately so I am hearing new names all the time

  • And also, technically I guess I'm in "The Nest stage" in life, but I find the boards on The Nest to be kind of lame.  Just my personal preference.
  • I am a regular on another board...my sister was hanging  around here while she was pregnant...so i started to come over for her...but found i really liked the honesty and attitude of many of the girls who used to be here (a few still are)she has since stopped posting but i stayed. i dont think i post as much as i used to but still check in once or twice a day.

    i have 3 kids...no more for me!

  • I wanted opinions on the names we were considering and to get an idea of what was popular (so we didn't choose a popular name).  I also found that I agreed with a lot of the other regulars on this board, so I decided to stick around.

  • I've always been interested in names. I wouldn't call myself a name nerd as I'm not interested in the history of them etc. But I've always liked hearing different names. I've had a long shortlist (lol) for quite some time.

My DH and I have been TTC for a year now and finally had our BFP three weeks ago. That's when I came onto the Bump and started checking out some of the interesting boards. I find this one to be the MOST interesting one I've found so far! ;) I quite enjoyed my month board as well but I miscarried almost two weeks ago. So now I'm still hanging around this board because I just enjoy seeing all of the different names!

this is basically me too - except its not just names of people I think a lot about, but cities, streets, car names, names of shoe styles, etc. It was just something I always noticed and had a strong reaction to, either negative or positive.

PP, sorry to hear about your loss.

  • Honestly started posting here because I was kind of baby crazy after we got married and before we were TTC. I've always liked names and thought this would be a good place to dip my toe in the Bump water.

I just like seeing what people choose and why, seeing trends, and of course I'm a sucker for name fails.

  • I have been a name nerd since I was about 8 or 9 years old. I used to take my mom's baby name book and write down the names I liked and pretend that I had a LONG list of children to name lol.

When I learned how to search the internet as a teenager I went on naming forums to discuss names and I've had a namelist of my own since as far back as I can remember.

Now, I am currently more of a Knottie than a Bumpie. As you can tell from my siggie I am getting married in 6 months and we have decided to TTC shortly afterward. At that point I plan to make an intro on the TTGP board. Until then, this is the only board on TB that I feel I have any right to post in.

  • I'm a die-hard name nerd.

Also, DH and I decided on a boy name & girl name long before DD was born. After she was born, I realized we didn't have any other girl names in reserve if we have another daughter. I started posting some thoughts on here a while back (maybe a year ago?) and now we're set with a second girl name.

Ha ha. I TOTALLY did the same thing as a kid.

Like a pp, I also have a list of names saved in my phone. I'd only had a small shortlist until the last year when I started adding many more. lol

  • I love names and I enjoy hearing why people choose the names they do (family name, special meaning, just liked it, whatever).  We haven't started TTC yet, but we do have a name list and from being on here I hear of names I wouldn't run into as much IRL and have added some of them to my name list.

HA! This is me too. I always remember names.
And I've always loved names. Not necessarily meaning and origins but more styles and trends. Like in geneology.

I always had a long list of names for my "kids" when I was younger :)
