What would be a good "back up" carseat?

My mom mentioned wanting to get a car seat for Ava for her car, because it's a pain to move our Britax from my car to hers.  Plus when I'm in the hospital with DD2, my mom and DH are going to be passing Ava back and forth, and it would just make life a little easier. We are not in the position to buy another Britax, so I'm looking for something not as pricey, but still very safe.

Any suggestions?

  • We really like the Cosco Scenera! It is less than $40 at Walmart, gets great ratings and is easy to install. It isn't as comfy, that is about it! We use ours for travel (air/rental car) and I use it for the girls.

  • They are all considered safe, so you are certainly ok with going with the cheapest one out there.  The main differences is there is less padding and the height and weight limits may be less (especially bc I think you are still rear-facing right?).  But in a crash, you are fine.

We have the First Years True Fit as our main car seats in both DH and my car.  It was about $140 or so at walmart and I did the free site-to-store so no shipping.  I wanted it for the extended height allowed to rear-face.  We did just switch her to ff this month, but she still had plenty of room to rf.  We are extremely happy with the seat and I would have bought it for my parents considering how often they have her.  But they already had bought a convertible (one of those convertibles that also changes to a booster, but not a high back bookster I think) at Sams back while i was still pregnant (which has worked out fine as well).  I think it was like $99, but if she had been bigger she would have outgrown it rf by now.

  • We really like the Evenflo Titan.  We have 3 of them.
  • We just got the Evenflo Tribute for DH's truck. It was around $55 at BRU, but we did the trade-in and got 25% off that. I think Walmart and/or Target had it cheaper w/out the discount.... maybe $45-$50

We just needed something so he could pick him up from daycare (a 3mi ride). I have the Evenflo Symphony in my car, and love it. The Tribute is really basic, no padding... but so far so good. It was really easy to install (even w/out the LATCH system, since DH's truck doesn't have it) and the straps are easy to adjust. I wouldn't plan on using it for a long car ride, but it serves it's purpose. And like jnk said, all carseats have to pass the same safety standards... just because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles doesn't mean it's any less safe. The most important thing is that they are installed correctly.

My mom has a Graco in her car, not sure what model- it's just a basic one. But I hate it. The straps are such a pain to adjust!

  • Thanks everyone! I will look into these!
  • We have Evenflo's as our back-up in the second car.
