CD users... diaper ?'s

So I had the best of intentions when pregnant.  Bought 2 sizes of prefolds and 6 covers.  Added in a few AIO's in newborn size and some OS pockets for later.

Fast forward to now - we have outgrown the prefolds and covers.  The AIO's too.  The OS just don't seem to fit well.  I have BG, RaR, and some GM fitted.  Poop almost always leaks out the sides of all of these.  Any suggestions for size on a skinny baby?

Also, what do y'all do when out of the house?  V easily wets a diaper every hour.  So on some days, it's 10 diapers from waking to bed.  How many CD's do you take in your diaper bag?  Is there a system that works better for you while out and about?   Lately, I've been using sposies when we are not at home.  Just easier!  But I'd like to CD fulltime.

Thanks!

Edited to add - sorry it's a post & run.  Bath/bed time here.

Re: CD users... diaper ?'s

  • RaR are by far the smallest of the OS pockets we have.  DD has chubby thighs, and BG OS fit her the best right now.  We've actually never had poop leak out of the side of a pocket diaper; even when she has massive poops.  Are you putting them on tight enough?  There shouldn't be any gaping at the legs at all.

We've only put one sposie on her in her life, before she went to the nursery in the hospital (we took our cloth with us).  When we're running errands, I just take two or three diapers and a few cloth wipes.  If you're using a BG or RaR OS with the regular insert (as opposed to the little NB one), I can't imagine how she could be leaking through them in an hour!  But you could try stuffing them with hemp or bamboo topped by the NB insert; those fibers are way more absorbent than MF.

  • We're using prefolds and wraps.  I just throw the prefolds and wipes in her diaper bag along with an extra cover or two (I usually figure out how long we'll be gone, assume one diaper every two hours, then add two or three).  I have two Planet Wise wet bags that I put the dirty stuff in and when we get home I dump the whole bag in the wash.  So far we only have leaking if we don't put the wrap on properly or if she's made a mess in her sleep, but usually only a wet leak, no poo explosions.  Good Luck!

  • I have a super skinny little boy.  He weighed 12 lbs at 4 months and was 24 inches long.  The RaR fit great.  I use Grovia AI2's with the snap in organic cotton inserts and the BG OS 4.0's on the smallest setting  and they all fit fine.  I have found that aplix works better than snaps.  I can get a super tight fit that way.  But I prefer snaps because the aplix wears out quickly.  You almost have to get it tighter than you think it needs to be to prevent leg leaks.

Well said.  I usually use Bum Genius Elementals when leaving the house (so I don't have to pull out the inserts afterwards) or Gro Via AI2's.

I don't have a skinny baby (97% percentile) so I'm not sure about fit.  Just make sure these are on tight enough.  Are the inserts soaked even when it leaks?

  • I think maybe I'm not getting it tight enough.  Seems like to get the legs tight, the belly is super tight.  Even though the prefolds no longer fit, I use them trifolded in a cover.  But again, if she pees, it's soaked right through.  All of my OS are snaps... maybe I should try an aplix to get it tighter.

    Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

  • I sew my own, so I can't really suggest any brands, but I usually use fitteds with a cover when we go out. That way I can switch them out and not carry around a lot of bulky diapers. I try to keep about 5 on me and an extra cover, just in case, but I usually only use 2 at the very most.

Yeah, a prefold might not be absorbent enough if she's a really heavy wetter.  I only use snaps, but some people do get a better fit with aplix!

  • I have an incredibly tall and skinny baby, who wets pretty heavy.

During the day, I actually use Flips with prefolds (Green Mountain) as the insert.  At night, I use pocket diapers (Kawaii or BG) with the microfiber PLUS a hemp insert, or I use a prefold with wool (Thanks again to Kacelle!).  Occaisionally, she gets damp through the night because she sleeps for so long (12 hours).  I have ONE random diaper that has never leaked, and it is made by Totsbots and I bought it locally.  Its amazing, actually... but it was around $22 so I don't have more than one :)

FWIW - I travel with sposies for simplicity and because I have them STILL left over as gifts (even after giviing much to the women's shelter).  Once I am through them, however, I plan to move to the sposie inserts for the Flips.  I actually LOVE my Flips.

  • I may try some Flips or other hybrid.  We did a pocket test last night.  Put a hemp and both inserts (full size and newborn) in a RaR OS.  Put in on the smallest snaps.  Still leaked!  So bummed.  Her gown was wet this morning, as was the sheet.  I'm thinking I should do a trial from an online store just to see if other brands will fit her better.

That said, looks like we will still be using sposies until I find something that works.  Viv is not really tall - only 22 inches, but she's skinny.  Last weight was 11 pounds 4 ounces.  No belly or thighs to speak of.  Not really a butt either. :) No idea how  that happened with me or my DH.

  • At his 4 month Ben was 26" and 14lbs- skinny legs/waist/butt.

Were using prefolds and covers.  They work the best.  I have a couple different pocket and they leak too much.  Right now the infant prefolds are snug, but still work ok and the premium are big, but I fold down the front to make it more absorbent.  They're a little bulky, but they seem pretty leak proof.
