Babies: 0 - 3 Months

how do you bathe?

We have been only bathing her about once a week in the little dish pan we got from the hospital. I put a big beach towel down on floor in her room, put filled pan  on it then bathe her, usually DH holds her and I wash with washcloth.

But now that she is getting bigger and a little more steady I want to start using the actual baby bath tub thingy. But do you put it in bath tub to fill up and give her bath in bathtub? to me that would be difficult bending over and such.

or do you but the tub on like table or floor and fill it up and bath? but the how do you remove water... I am clueless...advice please

also what is the best way to clean in between their toes and in belly button?

Re: how do you bathe?

  • We've been filling up the baby bath and I put it on our coffee table and I sit on the sofa to bathe her. Also, with my son we had one of those fancy bath tubs with the sling in it, this time we have a cheap white tub with a mesh support thing. I find the cheap tub with the support SO much easier to have control over a newborn in the bath. The expensive tub was a PITA to bathe my son and the sling sat so far above the water he froze in it.

And it just sits nicely in the kitchen sink. SOOOOO easy to bathe LO. :-)

  • We have a large, single basin sink, so we sit the baby tub in the sink, fill, and go! I make sure to have an extra soft towel on the counter with his hooded towel on top of it waiting for him for when we pull him out, Little Man does NOT like being cold!

  • we have been using the baby bath since his cord stump fell off.

We usually fill it up and put it on the counter and bathe him in that. I also lie a towel on the counter w/ his towel over it. I then put him on that when he is done

For the past few nights I have been keeping the baby bathtub in the real bathtub (empty of course). I then lie him on the bathmat covered in a towel & his towel. Its a bit awkward reaching over the tub but I find that its less of a mess & easier to drain the tub

We have this and it sits on our kitchen sink too.  I've been bathing him in this since he was 2 weeks old and it's so nice because he's at my height and I can use the sprayer on the sink to wash his hair and fill the tub.

When I was in the hospital they said the best place to bathe baby is in the kitchen because it tends to be the warmest room in the house.

He gets a bath every night, per pedi's instructions.  We only use soap on his hair, genitals and bottom per pedi.  We let him soak in the water, which he loves, and wipe him down with a wet washcloth and no soap.

  • We use this tub- https://www.target.com/p/The-First-Years-Sure-Comfort-Newborn-to-Toddler-Tub/-/A-623913

We set it over the kitchen sink. Makes it easy to drain it and no bending over while we bathe him! We use the mesh sling that comes with it with enough water so that LO's bottom and back are in the water. That keeps him warm enough to make him content.

I just wipe out his belly button with a washcloth. The other night I noticed he was accumulating some fuzz between his toes, so we used wet q-tips to clean there. Worked great!

  • We just set it in the bathtub.  Then tip it to dump it.  I sit sort of sideways against the tub so I'm not bending so much.  She's not in there very long so it's not uncomfortable.

  • We have the fisher price whale tub (love love love it!). I bathe him every night on the kitchen table. I use a rubbermaid drink pitcher to fill the tub, and then I just life the whole thing us and pour it in the sink to empty. It's a little bit awkward to lift when full, but I have never had a problem. As for belly button, i didn't really do anything special once it fell off. For toes I clean with a wet Q-tip a couple times a week.
  • We've only used the baby bath a few times. But, when we did we tried various things. Yes, putting it in the tub makes it more difficult to reach over, but I found it was easier for rinsing her off because I put a little bit of water in the bottom of the tub, too. Up on the counter was way easier on the back (fill it up in tub, then transfer it), then after she was dried or handed off or whatever we just put it in the tub and unplugged it. Ours wouldn't fit in any of our sinks.

However this is not how we bathe her (and we only used the tub maybe 3 or 4 times max). We actually get in the bath tub with her (or take her into the shower with us). She is so much way happier in there than she ever was in the baby tub, and it's much more fun for us, too. :)

  • We gave our LO a sponge bath once the first week home, then started with real baths the second week. We put her baby tub in our tub, put a couple of inches of water in it, and bathe her. We do a full bath with soap every other day and a water only bath the other days. No matter what we apply lotion after to keep her skin from drying out. When we are done, we empty her baby tub by opening the stopper in it (it has a little drain hole) and turn it upside down overnight, just to get all the water out.

This really helps our daughter relax before bed and has helped us get into a routine.

  • We put the baby bath on the kitchen counter beside the sink.  I always have DH's help so this works well for us.  He fills it from the faucet and then there is a drain hole in the bathtub so it is easy to drain into the sink.  We put the towel on the kitchen table and get LO out of the bath and walk 5 ft to put him in the towel and then I carry him to the changing station we have set up on our first floor.  I don't do anything special to clean b/w his toes.  They don't seem to be the problem for us; the area b/w LO's fingers was always the most disgusting.  I do the best I can to separate them and get at it with a washcloth but he still has a pretty tight grip.  Just getting him into the bath seems to help and we do it every night(although we only use soap twice a week or so).  HTH!

  • I got the "whale of a tub" and I just fill it up at the kitchen sink and I bathe her right there at the sink. It's easier for me and then I can just pop the plug and the water drains right down the sink.

I have a towel layed out on the counter next to the sink and I lay her down on it after the bath and dry her off.

I just use a soft cloth to clean her. You'll find there is no special way to really clean the toes and belly button- just clean them like you would clean yours, but much gentler.

  • I would try to put it in the sink if it would fit in ours (kitchen sink).  I put it in the bathtub and did the same with DD#1.  Its not that awkward and its usually pretty quick.

I must add though - I remember with DD#1, when she was transitioning to the normal tub, people on here were saying that their LO's were totally freaked out by the big bathtub and were having a hard time getting them used to it. My DD didn't have any issues with it and loved the bath.  Whether it was just the mere fact that she loves the bath or because I had been bathing her in the baby tub in the big tub she may have been used to it.  I remember reading that the large tub can be intimidating to LOs.  Just something to think about when considering where to bathe your LO.

  • Currently he showers with dad.  He wasn't a fan of baths at first and I found that he felt much better being held.  No loud shrieks.  He is getting to the point now where he hardly cries, so I may go back to using the tub.  As far as toes and belly button, I try to clean those once a day, right after he eats or is in a calm state.  He usually lets me do his toes and hands without a fight now.

  • We have a baby bath seat instead of an actual tub. I just put the seat in our bathtub and let the tub fill up just enough so that I have enough water to rinse her when needed. I'm used to giving DD1 baths in the big tub so I don't think it's overly difficult to bend over for the few minutes it takes me to bathe her.

  • I bathe DS in a tub at the sink. It has a drain in the bottom but if it didn't I'd dump it  in the tub since its bigger and less room to miss!! It has a sling/hammock thing that he lays in to keep him from laying all the way down in it. He loves it! I don't plan to put it or use the tub for baths until he's alot bigger and I have to, seems like it will be hard on your knees and back, but they do have little stools you can use to sit your knees on to give them cushion.

  • My kids shower with me. My toddler and I get in. I shower while she plays, then bathe her. Then DH comes and gets toddler and brings in baby, and I sit down and bathe her. DH gets her, I finish and get out :-)

Plus, this way I can trick DH into getting them dressed for bed hehe
