Two Under 2

xp: Please reassure me that things will be ok

Silas had his 4 month appointment today and everything was great.  Except his weight gain he was 11 lbs 12 ozs at his 2 month appointment (50%) and today he was only at 13 lbs 8 ozs ((10%) he was 8 lbs 8 ozs at birth).  We have to supplement him now.  I just feel like I am failing my poor wee guy.  It is breaking my heart that I am not able to give him all that he needs.  My doctor says it is because I got pregnant it made my supply dwindle.  Thank you for letting me cry it out here.  I don't want my mom to worry to much this is a very hard time of year for her (her brother died 4 years ago this past Sat and tomorrow will be 3 years since her mom died).  I am just happy that they caught it now and not in a couple of months and something really bad happen.  If you have any suggestions that helped you would be greatly appreciated?

  • Does he have enough wet diapers throughout the day?  Does he seem satisfied after nursing?  Do you have a lactation consultant that you could meet with?  They'd be able to weigh him before and after to see how much he gains.  Plus, they might have tips to help safely boost your supply during pregnancy or help your little guy get more milk.  His weight gain is on the low end, so I definitely think supplementing is a good idea for now.

all good info. I would try to nurse nurse nurse, and do a supplement maybe once or twice a day for. Drink a TON of water, around 6 weeks my supply went down a bit but uping the water intake helped. I would definitely suggest the weigh before and after a feeding. That is VERY helpful. hang in there, you can still nurse, you just need a little help. You're doing a great job.

  • Maybe try seeing a nutritionist.  They might be able to give you some advice to eat what you need to nurse and support your pregnancy.  Also as others said, I would see a lactation consultant.  My supply declined when I got pregnant (DS was 8 mos old) and around 9 mos he did start getting some formula because I didn't make enough milk.  The good news is he switched back and forth easily.
