Hi, I've been lurking for the last 2 weeks since I found out I'm having twins. I'm sure I'll be on here more as I get farther along!
I see lots of you talking about going to an MFM, and I had to google what that was. My Ob didn't say anything about it. Should I look one up or would my OB refer me to one if it's needed? I don't have another appointment with her until Oct 11,
Re: Does everyone see a MFM?
it depends on a lot of things. if your twins are mo/di (sharing a placenta) then you definitely should. if your OB truly doesn't have multiples experience, you should. (i say "truly" because my OB claimed to, but it wasn't long before it became apparent that he was an idiot.)
some people say you absolutely should, but i think it really depends. ask your OB.

Thanks!
My OB said our twins are probably fraternal, which I think means di/di. She has twins herself, and seems to be comfortable with multiples. I've only seen her once and that's when I found out that there are twins in there, so I really don't remember much from the second half of the appointment. I was kind of in shock! I'll be a lot more comfortable after I can talk to her in a more balanced state of mind
FYI di/di twins have a 1:9 chance of being ID.. I guess I was that 1 in 9!
Not really.
I had all my ultrasounds done at a hospital where an MFM reviewed them. I met him one time at 18 weeks for an ultrasound, and that was it. He reviewed every scan and sent notes to my doctor. He made the call on when to have the c-section. But it's not like I had appointment where I talked with him like I did with my doctor.
My girls were mo/di, BTW.
I read that. I won't be suprised at all if these are identical because there are no twins anywhere in my family.
It's not a bad idea to have one in case you need it. My OB does high risk (and an MFM supposedly reviews twin pg files), so I didn't have an MFM until my cervical issues came up, as the 1st half of my pg was uneventful. I self referred at @ 20w after I started funneling, to get a 2nd opinion on a cerc and more proactive monitoring. If I had waited the two wks to go back to the OB, I would have lost my babies.

Thankful for every day
i do. my former OB has, i'm sure, a lot of experience with multiples as she claimed, but i didn't really care for the prenatal care plan that was set forth for twins. they weren't treating a twins pregnancy any diff. than a singleton (was told by the practice that they wouldn't induce me and would let me go to 41 weeks if i didn't go into labor on my own. i don't think so!).
luckily i was referred to a great MFM practice at the best hospital around by a friend, and have had a great experience there.
Congrats and Welcome! I'm from Plano! : )
I only saw my OB but, there was an MFM in the practice that she would have referred me to if one would had been needed.
I had ID twins. I did not see an MFM. My OB said if anything came up where I needed to be futher monitored he would refer me. I didn't have any complications and was monitored closely. I was comfortable with just the care of my OB.
