what convertible car seat for smaller car?

Sorry if this has recently been discussed, but I don't bump much and the search option does not work well for me!

Anyone have the latest edition of baby bargains?  I know the Britax Marathon is great, but I wondered if it would fit in a car such as an impala?

Could anyone tell me what Baby Bargains says about the Safety 1st Air?

What is your choice?  Thanks!

Re: what convertible car seat for smaller car?

  • We recently rented a car for our vacation.  And we got a 2012 Impala.  It's A LOT bigger than our cars.  I'm sure any car seat would fit comfortably in it.  We used our Britax roundabout and it fit best in the middle seat since it still needs to be rear facing.  However, there was still TONS of room up front for the passenger (I had my seat all the way back) and the driver didn't have to adjust the seat forward to make room.

The Britax Roundabout also fits in my tiny Mazda 3 and we have a Graco MyRide in DH's Ford Focus.  Both are smaller cars.

  • Impalas are pretty big (my mom has one), but our Britax Boulevard fits just fine in that car as well as our Civic and Sonata if that helps.

  • I think with most convertible car seats and any smaller car you'll find that you may have less leg room up front when the car seat is installed rear-facing; however, I will say that our Britax still allows for a fair amount of leg room in our Subaru Outback.  I think an Impala probably has more back seat space than an Outback. We were able to bring the carseat out to our car and try it before we bought it, which is great since carseats are a final sale.  I would suggest that wherever you go to buy, you ask to try the seat out first.  Good luck!

  • Our Safety 1st onSide air fits in my dad's dinky Mazda Protege just fine and if I remember right his car is classified as a compact.
