3rd Trimester

question about bottles

i saw the posts before and really can't understand how a baby can't take a bottle until they are 9 months old. Sure, they may refuse if you wait too long and it might suck and they might not eat for a while, but eventually they need to eat. My friend didnt come to my wedding because she had a 6 month old who wouldn't bottle feed and it drove me insane.

i'm not saying to introduce a bottle super early, but there is no way in hell i am not going to be able to go anywhere for more than a few hours for even 3 months.

Sorry for the vent. I just don't get it.

Re: question about bottles

  • I have never heard of this before....some babies really don't take to bottles at all, or just the wrong ones?

  • According to my mil, my dh refused bottles and would just go crazy nursing once my mil got off of work and picked him up from daycare.

So he didn't eat all day until she picked him up from daycare?  How old was he, not an infant..right?  This topic is making my ffing decision alot easier, instead of trying to readjust him to bottles from the boob!

  • I am hoping baby will take both the breast and the bottle as soon as possible. That way, daddy can do feedings and give me a break. I have never heard of that before.
  • The only problem I've ever seen IRL is when Mom tries to feed DC the bottle.  Baby becomes confused and doesn't understand why the new change.  I bf DS and DH introduced a bottle at about 5 weeks old.  DS never had any nipple confusion - he also used a pacifier from day 1 though.  I'm not a huge believer in nipple confusion, IMO parents just give up too easily.  If DC won't take the first couple of bottles you give, then try changing nipples.  Eventually you will find one that DC will like.
  • I don't know how old he was.  As far as this being the reason to ff, I wouldn't make that jump.  My dd was given a bottle starting at 2 days old and ds at 2 wks old and neither had a problem switching back and forth.  Both kids also had pacis from a couple of days old.  It may not work for every baby, but I wouldn't let stories like that scare you.  From what I've seen, more often than not, even very young babies have no problems switching from breast to bottle.
  • I've read to have Dad give the bottle so the baby understands - bottle from dad, boob from mom.  Then they don't get confused about the routine change.
