Special Needs

It's a BOY! Possibly with Downs Syndrome

[Good morning everyone! I originally made this post on the 2nd Trimester board and someone suggested that I put it on the special needs board:]

Today is a special day. My husband and I found out that we are having a boy! Yeeaaa! During the ultrasound they noticed that there wasnt a nasal bone. The doctor told me the possibilities, but to be sure he told me to go to another doctor in the same building for a 2nd opinion. At the 2nd doctor he did 2 ultrasounds (one by him and one by his nurse). They both didnt see the nasal bone and also they saw something in the heart (cant remember what its called) that is also a sign of Downs Syndrome. At that point they did an amniocentesis and we will know the results by Thurs/Friday.

I have a lot on my mind. Of course I want a "normal" child, but I know that God doesnt make mistakes! We are going to love this child the same way that we love our 6 year old daugther. I am praying that everything will be fine, but I will be the best parent I can possibly be no matter what the results are. I have a very caring heart and my child is a gift from God.
The last 2 1/2 yrs have been very hard. My daughter lost her dad April 2009. Then I lost my dad only 2 hrs after I got married. My 1 year anniversary is in a few weeks and its going to be so emotional for me. Now hearing this news about our unborn son is hard to deal with. I just ask for your prayers and any encouraging words. Thanks!

[The next day I posted this message after I received so many replies]:

I just want to thank each and everyone of you who post on this thread. I am in tears right now. The news finally settle in this morning and I have been an emotional wreck! I thought the test results would be back tomorrow like the 2nd doctor said, but I found out that it actually takes up to 4 weeks to know. You have no idea how great it felt to come back to this message board and see all of the wonderful messages you all have written.  I have so much going on in my mind. I know that God will make this situation the best that he can. Thank u all soo soooooo sooo much for the prayers and support, I truly mean that!!!

  • My little one has Down syndrome and is awesome.  You may want to check out Babycenter's Down syndrome pregnancy board, and www.downsyndromepregnancy.org.  The online DS community is huge, wonderful, and supportive.  If your little one has a heart defect, with or without DS, the DS community knows a LOOT about that, too!

More than anything, here is to a HEALTHY little boy.

  • You all are so wonderful. Thank u for the prayers! Now I am feeling better. No matter what plan God has for us, I know we can handle it!
  • Congratulations on your baby boy! Please do not be upset, doctors can be wrong plenty of times, like 90 times out of a hundreed, I speak from personal experience. When DS was born I was told he has bilateral hearing loss and heart murmur. Well, now he is 16 months and his hearing is excellent and his heart is 100% fine! The doctors always tell you the worst, that's how it works. i just wanted to save you the tears I cried when they scared me with all this nonsense.

I have seen ultrasounds being wrong, not detecting things or detecting things that are not there. For once, a friend of mine got ultrasound results for a baby girl and 5 months later thye had ...a boy with a HUGE male organ:) Aparently the doctors have missed it on the ultrasound.

Also, here is what I found someone wrote on another site- baby center:

"There was another lady on the board - sorry, cannot remember her name but can dig if you would like me to. They couldn't see the nasal bone both on the 12 week and 20 week ultrasound. She did amnio and all is fine. There was another lady whose baby's nasal bone was undetected at the 12 weeks ultrasound. They got the second opinion and the bone was detected. Ultrasounds and technicians/doctors are wrong at times. Try to stay positive. I know it's easier said than done. After we got our 1:21 chance of DS I remember crying to my husband asking him to 'fix it'. Completely irrational request, I know, but that is how I felt. My boy is fine."

So please cheer up and try to make the most of your pregnancy. Enjoy your growing belly and send the positive energy to your wonderful little boy
