Health and Fitness Weekly Check-in

Since some of us want to get motivated to get healthy and get in better shape, let's try to do a weekly health and fitness check-in.

For those of you interested, please post some possible check-in questions below. Like Lisa suggested, we can have a few standard ones each week -- how you're feeling, how you fared with nutrition and exercise goals, something you're proud of, optional weigh-in, etc.-- and then a couple that are new each time.

So, whaddya think? Post your comments and questions below.

Anyone want to take charge? If not, I don't mind doing it. Smile

Re: Health and Fitness Weekly Check-in

  • I can't commit to being in charge since we're traveling a ton but I need some accountability and will participate when I can. I just started back up with going to the gym this week. I worked out the last 3 days! Woohoo! Nothing too hardcore but I feel better already. I want to start taking K to the kids club so me & B can both work out and have some time away from her. Of course we're leaving for 3 weeks in a week so that'll all go to hell quickly. But hopefully we can resume it when we get back. Oh, and my goal is to lose 5-8 lbs. My goal weight has always been 105 but my body liked 108. Now it likes a little more fluff. Lol.

Cool! Where are you going for 3 weeks?

I need accountability, too. I'm committing to one gym class a week for now and have been doing pretty well with nutritious eating. I want to re-set my body to the point where I crave healthy food and exercise -- haven't had that since giving birth. :(

After we were all at the aquarium, DH commented that you, Lori and I have similar body-types. I guess in the line up shot we look like we do! :)  I don't think I need to drop pounds, but I really need to tone up and feel healthy and strong again. I'm tired of feeling like a gelatinous blob.

You should share your running tips. I have zero endurance, but I wouldn't mind adding that challenge into the mix.

  • Yay! I definitely need accountability and concrete goals (hence the BOOOOOOOOTS Stick out tongue) to stay on track, so I think this will be really helpful for me.

OK, questions other than the standard ones...

Do you track calories? If so, what site do you use?

How do you stay motivated to stick to your diet/exercise plan?

Any tips for eating out without totally blowing your diet? (Or if you don't go out very often, do you just go for gold and get whatever you want?)

Do you have a particular type of food plan - e.g., low carb, low G.I., gluten free, etc - that seems to work the best for your body?

In general, are the people around you (family, friends, coworkers, etc.) supportive, negative, or neutral about you trying to live healthily?

How do you avoid feeling deprived when it comes to healthy eating? Planned "cheat" meals? Pure willpower? Something else?

What part(s) of the transition to your diet/exercise plan have you found the hardest and the easiest?

OK, that's all I can think of for now - I'll check back in if I come up with anything else.

  • I think this is a GREAT idea. I've been eating like crap since A was born (and okay, maybe during the 3rd tri as well... I like to indulge!), and I feel like I lost a bunch of weight and my stomach was flatter a few weeks PP than now! Boo. This will be great motivation/support/ideas.

I'd like to know what people eat as healthy snacks (constantly hungry since my milk supply amped back up!). Or easy, quick, healthy dinner recipes! I don't have much time yet, but don't want to be eating takeout or frozen.

  • I'm in!

I want to start adding running to my workout.  Besides C25k, people who already run, how do you suggest easing into running and what shoes would you recommend?

List your healthy snacks or lunches?

Are there any healthy blogs you cruise around in to get weight loss tips?

Going to FL - Disney World  & Caribbean cruise.  My BFF (from HI) is taking her son so we're meeting them and her parents there.

Umm, and I don't know about us having similar body types.  Well, I just looked at the pic and I guess we kinda do.  You're way skinnier though!  I remember thinking to myself that I wanna be as thin as you!  LOL.

I totally feel like a blob, too.  I haven't run since the half marathon in December so I don't know that I have tips.  Just start out slow, do walk/run intervals (we run 4 minutes, walk 1 min) and then work up.  Do you guys have a jogging stroller?  We could go jogging around Diamond Head when we're back.  Oh, and you live in HK!  You should be doing Koko Head every day!  I know it sucks but that is a GOOD workout!  I'm sure when we move back we'll be doing it A LOT so you should come!

  • What about healthy recipes/snack/meal ideas?  I get bored when I'm dieting, and am always looking for new ideas.  It would be helpful if possible to include nutritional info, since some people count calories, some count fat grams, carbs, proteins, etc.

  • Awesome, thanks ladies!

I'll post our first check-in next Tuesday. I saw that the baby check-in went up on Tuesday this week, but Mondays the two prior? I don't want to overwhelm the board with double check-ins, but Tuesdays are usually pretty free for me and it might be nice to report our progress post-weekend. Hope that sounds OK, but if not, let me know! :)

Have fun on your vacay! And I was totally admiring your TONED legs while you were here. I have waaaaay too much jiggle going on and I'm very jealous!

I will take you up on group work outs when you're back. I dislike how crowded Koko Head is these days, though. I remember years ago when it was just you and the stairs and the wind and the sky. Sigh....

Thanks! I'll trade my legs for your arms!  Hahaha.  I don't even do anything for legs besides every day walking and occasional hiking.  They're the only part of my body that isn't jiggly, so I know what you mean.

Yeah, Koko Head is crowded.  Everyone has found the secret to staying in shape.  We could do Mariner's Ridge.  That one isn't nearly as challenging, though.
