memory foam mattress

Hey ladies,

we are receiving a brand new memory foam mattress as a gift and we can't wait to use it....HOWEVER, i've read some crazy stuff about the off-gassing that these mattress' and give off. any of you have any memory foam mattresses?

We have our 4 month old bubs and he co-sleeps with us in bed. i'm not too worried about the actual foam itself "molding" to his head since he sleeps mainly on his back but the off-gassing is what's freaking me out.  I had heard that when we receive it, let it air out in a separate room for at least a week before using?

Re: memory foam mattress

  • We just have a memory foam topper, but it did smell for a couple days. Airing it out is a good idea. I also am not comfortable having Owen on the foam; it's really pretty soft, and if he did end up on his stomach I think it would be dangerous.

  • We have a memory foam mattress. We got it several years ago, and I remember it smelling a little when we first got it. I wouldn't sleep with LO on it, especially not at first. When I lay DS on it (with me there during the day), I find he can't maneuver on it as easily as he can on the ground. I would worry about your LO rolling over on it, even after the "off-gassing" of the mattress.
  •  We have a memory foam mattress and we used it right away.  It smelled a little funny at first, but I wouldn't say BAD.  I doubt your LO will mind it.
