Night wakings while sleep training twins?

We are getting close to starting sleep training and moving the babies to their own room. It seems like it is taking forever to lower their crib mattresses, get the monitor working, move the chair in their room, etc., but maybe I'm just lazy and holding DS2 for 12 hours straight each night seems easier than listening to them cry!

I'm wondering what you do for night wakings if you are using CIO. So far we have always picked them up fast at night to avoid waking the other. One of the babies is still used to a bottle in the middle of the night, and one has gone a few days now without one (when he's being held, at least!). They are both chubby babies and I don't think they need the feedings, but they drink a full bottle right now whenever they wake up. And I'm wondering if going in to soothe one crying baby is going to wake the other one up. Thanks!

  • Can't wait to see the responses on this. I especially like when you said: "but maybe I'm just lazy and holding DS2 for 12 hours straight each night seems easier than listening to them cry! "

Because that is exactly me in the middle of the night! But now of course we've developed bad sleeping habits :(

  • I think we got lucky - their middle of the night waking just kept getting later and later until one night it didn't happen at all (around 3 months adjusted), and we've been set ever since.

That being said, we've never had a problem with one waking up the other by crying. During the rare bouts of sleep training we've had to do with DS at occasional periods of regression, DD will totally sleep through the screaming.

  • Ours pretty much sleep through the other crying. They don't sleep very well through us coming in and getting the other, though.

Ugh, I hope it goes well for you. Sleep is the bane of my existence.

  • We honestly didn't have much CIO at night either.  If one woke we would let them fuss and they almost always went back to sleep after a few minutes.  If they were hysterical we would quickly soothe then put them back down.  But hysterics were rare and the babies never woke each other up.  You'll probably be amazed at what they can sleep through!

  • We just started sleep training this week.  It was a little earlier than planned, but it had to be done for everyone's sake.  We only had to do it with one DD, so we separated them until we could get the sleep situation under control.  FWIW, the first night was horrible.  There was lots of crying on and off all night long.  She STTN the second night and the two following nights.  Everyone is much happier after some decent sleep.  Good luck!
