questions about NT scan

I'm am scheduled to have mine in 2 weeks! How long is the u/s? Did you meet with a doctor? Did they tell you anything that day or did you have to wait until your next OB appt? I'm trying to figure out how long I'm going to be there since someone is going to be watching my kids.

Re: questions about NT scan

  • I think everyone has a different experience. With my 1st pg, I had the scan done at a hospital, so first the scan was done by a tech, and then an MD came in (a MFM specialist, I think) & did the scan & measurements himself to compare with hers, and he gave me the numbers. Also, I don't recall hearing other people talk about this, but he pointed out to me the nasal bone, which he said would not likely be so developed on a baby with DS. It was really great to have all that info. I can't remember how long it took, though.

  • My experience was the same as the PP - I was in there for about 35-45 mins. It was Tuesday. And the angle of the dangle says girl :)

  • I had mine on Monday and I also had my first OB appointment scheduled for afterwards. The U/S lasted at least 35 minutes, could be shorter if your baby is more cooperative :) No results that day since it is a 3 part test: U/S and 2 blood works. I go back in a couple of weeks for the second blood test and then I will get results. However, the U/S and OB both said based on the U/S they did not see any concerns as the measurements were good.

  • I think it varies a lot. My bloodwork appt took 5 minutes (oh, except for the part where they LOST THE BLOODWORK, still grrrrr). The u/s appt took about 20 minutes and only involved the u/s tech. She didn't give me any results at that time. Now they will take those two results and combine them, then they'll call me with the final results. So mine was not time-consuming.

  • I don't remember getting a 2nd set of bloodwork last time.  I swear it was just the u/s and then the finger prick.  They were both done at the perinatal center at the hospital.

But then this time, my OB said there was a 2nd set of bloodwork.  I didn't pay too much attention to that at the time because I didn't know what she was talking about.  But she said she wouldn't give me that order until my next appt, which is at 15w. So, that doesn't make any sense to me.

A real complete NT scan includes talking with a genetic councelor, the u/s (15 to 45min depending on how baby cooperates), a blood test, and maybe talking with the OB/perinatologist too. My peri clinic says to reserve 1.5 hours and to NOT bring children.

Yep!  I just scheduled mine today, and that's exactly it.

maybe the combine it with the quad screening?

  • My LO was pretty uncooperative, so we were in there for the u/s close to an hour at least trying to get a good measurement.  Including the bloodwork, we were there for a little over 2 hours total.
