I do wash DS's pillows on occassion (about every 6 months). We do have a cover on them though. I was them on gentle. I do not wash ours, but just replace them.
The fabric softener dispenses during the last rinse cycle, I believe.
I just replace my own pillows, because I like em big and fluffy but firm, and the way I sleep ruins pillows. Haha! I replace DH's when I do mine.
I wash Basils every 6 months or so, but she has two pilowcases on hers pretty much at all times, so I'm not too worried about it. I don't put them in the dryer, because it ruins the fluff, and she likes hers kinda flat, not super fluffy.
*My* washer is an HE, so I don't know how that differs from yours. But we just moved into a new rental house that came with a washer, and I've been using it for a week or two until DH hooks mine up(I miss my washer and dryer!!) and it doesn't have a fabric softener compartment, so I just put it in at the same time as the soap, I just put a little extra. Not sure if it's "softening" like it should. but my clothes smell good, so it's working fine in my book.
We use a Downy ball in our washer, they are in the laundry detergent isle, its a blue ball, you add the softner and it comes out...I have no idea when , but it works LOL

I'm no help on the fabric softener - I only use the dryer sheets.
