Prenatal Vitamins

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are TTC and this is my first post... I'm still pretty new at all the lingo and what I need to know :) I have another day or so before my period ends and we start trying but I had a question about prenatal vitamins. I can't swallow anything larger than a tylenol, so I am using the Vitafusion Prenatal chewables. They have enough Folic Acid, but I'm concerned about the DHA (only 31% of your daily value). Do you have an suggestions as to what else I could take (preferably chewable or very small sized pill) to make sure I'm getting everything I need? Thanks for your help ladies!

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • Target makes a DHA supplement that's a small soft gel capsule.  I'm not sure what the percentage is but it should be pretty easy to swallow.

    Good luck!

  • I started out just taking a folic acid supplement and it was tiny. I do not have a brand or anything, but have a look around for those, as Folic Acid is the key thing when you are at the start of pregnancy, so I have heard.  Can you break pills in half?  That is another idea.

You don't need DHA right now, and even during pregnancy is controversial.  DHA was added to prenatals because the thought was it helped raise IQ, but studies have shown it makes to difference.  So don't worry about whether or not you are getting "enough" DHA.

  • I take Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA - https://www.nordicnaturals.com/en/Products/Product_Details/98/?ProdID=1434

It has 450mg DHA (50% RDA). Studies have had mixed results, but fish oil / DHA isn't something you can really overdose on, I'd rather err on the side of caution by taking it. And my OB/GYN recommends taking it.

(I buy it off Amazon, it's cheaper than the vitamin store or ordering directly from the company.)
