ADHD question

Sorry, I'm not a usual poster here, but I'd like to ask a question please...

For those of you with experience with ADD/ADHD, how did you know the difference between typical toddler behavior (i.e. tantrums, not listening/following directions) and ADD/ADHD?  Were there things that looking back on them made you think something more was going on than the terrible toddler years?  Are there specific red flags that even a 3 yr old would exhibit in terms of ADD/ADHD?

Re: ADHD question

  • I agree with Auntie.

My 10 yr old has an ADHD diagnosis, but we did not get him diagnosed until Kindergarten.  The signs I saw looking back were he seemed to require less sleep, restlessness, impusiveness (at 10 he still can not be relied upon to look both ways before crossing the street), the ability to hyperfocus on certain things, and the inability to focus at all at certain times.

I did not worry about getting him diagnosed until school because I felt he was not required to focus on anything that closely and we made sure to try and avoid situations where his impulsiveness could get him hurt.
