Babies: 9 - 12 Months

changing a wiggly baby's diaper

Anyone have tips for how to deal with my ridiculously squirmy 9.5-month-old during diaper changes?  I do not use a changing table anymore because my DS kept trying to roll off of it, but even changing him on the floor is a huge challenge.  He is constantly trying to roll over and crawl away.  Any tips for how to keep him in place?  I've tried letting him hold something he likes a lot (like the wipes case or my phone) but usually he just tries to roll while holding it.  The daycare staff say that he is awful for diaper changes for them, too.  Any ideas from you would be greatly appreciated!

Re: changing a wiggly baby's diaper

  • I think Huggies makes diapers for squirmy babies now. basically, they're smaller pull-ups.

    Maybe give those a try?

Good Luck! I know how frustrating it can be!

  • Honestly, I let DD crawl away sometimes. Makes her happy. Obviously I do not use a changing table!

Other than that, just be super quick. Have everything ready to go (I get wipes out before the diaper comes off and everything) and be quick. Sometimes playing peekaboo works. I give DD a clean diaper and say, "Where's Rosemary?" She'll play long enough to get it done. Sometimes!

  • My DD is the exact same way.  The only thing that seems to help (and this isn't 100%), is to give her a toy for each hand.  I try to find something that she really likes but doesn't get often.  Sometimes, I end up giving her my cell phone or my car key, as those seem to be her alltime favs.  I also ended up buying those Huggies slipons, and I use them on days that she is especially wiggly. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing the other responses.

  • I just have to be very quick and hold on tight to those legs! Sometimes the distraction technique works, sometimes it doesn't. I try to talk/sing/make funny faces to keep him focussed on me and not whatever he is trying to crawl to.

  • Sounds like we are all fighting the same battle!  I am hoping that it is just a phase and soon (please, soon!  please!) he will be more cooperative and I will be able to reason with him and tell him that the sooner he holds still and lets me change him, the sooner he'll be able to play.  Or I can bribe him with something.

What makes it worse is that he is on antibiotics for an ear infection right now which makes him have awful diarrhea.  Gross!

  • I find LO rolls less in the curved changing pad then in the flat one, but it's only a little better.

  • DS went through that phase. He was impossible. There were a few times I literally held him down with my leg while I changed his diaper. He has a few toys and books that he only gets during diaper changes and that helped a lot. He is much better now and will lay on the changing table like an angel again.
