lens recommendations?

I'm going to be taking some pics for my daughter's yearbook. The first thing is the pumpkin patch.

I'm thinking I'm going to rent a lens to play with my camera more does anyone have any recommendations.

ETA I have a cannon rebel.

TIA.

Re: lens recommendations?

  • what lens(es) do you have?

I have a 50 mm - if you don't have that, rent one of those! If you do, the next one i plan to rent/buy is somewhere between a 28 and 35 mm.

  • I have a 18-55mm lens and a 55-200 lens, just the factory ones and love them. I can do sooooo much with them I really don't need anything else. If I ever buy/rent another one it will definitely be a macro one like ladipale suggested.
  • Are you shooting indoors?  If you are, I'd go with a 35mm f/1.8.  The 50mm can be tight indoors...especially on a crop sensor (which you have).

I'd pick up something other than a kit lens (18-55 or 55-200mm) if it's indoors too. You'll want something that opens up wider than those so you can let in more light.

If they are outdoors, the 24-70mm is a great lens.  As is the 70-200mm f/2.8.  Just know that with the 70-200 you'll have quite a bit of distance between you and your subject and since it's preschoolers school photos, I'd probably just go with the 24-70mm.

the 24-70 f/2.8 is what i'm renting to take to seattle. so that gets my vote, since you'll be in a pumpkin patch - it's more versatile than a fixed focal length will be.
