Trouble TTC

Clomid vs Injectables for IUI

I have done one IUI on clomid and I am starting #2.  I responded really well to the clomid-had 3 follicles that my RE thinks I ovulated from.

My question is if you respond well to the clomid what is the added advantage to using injectables-or is there one?  I'm just trying to think ahead as to what I want our next step to be if this IUI doesn't work, and my RE hasn't mentioned injectables.

Re: Clomid vs Injectables for IUI

  • I responded well to my first (and only) round of Clomid as well.  But when I was at risk for losing my health insurance, I told my RE I wanted the best possible chances that cycle while doing an IUI.  She recommended injectables and said that they produce more mature, better quality eggs.  I don't know how true that is, but I was pretty much up for anything.

  • We skipped clomid all together since our issue is egg quality and #.  Our RE said that injectables help produce better quality eggs and give you more control throughout the cycle because you can change the dose from day to day.

I also didn't want to start with clomid.  I don't have any ovulation issues, so I felt like clomid wouldn't really help all that much.  That was just my feeling though, and not really based on anything.

If you have insurance coverage, I would go for the injectables.  When I got the bill for all of our medicine, it came to $6800.  Luckily our insurance covered some of that (5 gonal pens, 6 cetrotide, 1 Hcg, 2 boves of crinone)  Depending on what you Dr. orders, you might have left over and be able to do more than 1 cycle with that 1 prescription.  We only used 1 pen, 1 cetrotide, 1 box of cirnone and the Hcg.  You can sort of stock up.

    GL whatever you decide!

  • I responded well to my first two rounds of Clomid, and then not as well on my third round. If this cycle is a BFN, we are going to try an injects + IUI in November. I asked my RE his thoughts and he gave us several choices, but agreed with trying injectables. We want to try everything we can before IVF. We are unexplained and 100% OOP, so our course of treatment is based mostly on our own choices.

  • We're out of pocket as well, so I think part of it was that she wanted to try clomid first b/c its so much cheaper than injectables.  I would hate to spend the OOP money on injectables (which is obviously thousands more than clomid), have it not work and have to move to IVF-and be that much further in the hole.

  • Ditto what most people said. I responded well to Clomid, but I didnt get KU. I also was a raging lunatic on Clomid.  My RE recommended moving on to injectibles (I did Follistim) because injectibles apparently produce better quality eggs and have fewer side effects.

I was scared about giving myself shots at first, but after the first one I realized it was a piece of cake. I definitely preferred injectibles to Clomid.

  • According to my RE, your chances with injects are 3x better than chances with Clomid.  We are oop as well, so I'm hoping that Clomid does the trick, but if not, we'll be on to injects as well.

  • I hope you don't mind me chiming in.  I had a wonderful response to clomid and femara but I didn't get my BFP until I switched to injects.  My RE told me that injects is an entirely different ball game.  I assume it produces better quality follicles.  Although, it is a lot more expensive.
