February 2011 Moms

NT Scans

First of all, I'm excited to see there are so many of us Feb 11 moms who are preggers again! It's nice to know there are others out there in the same boat.

Second, it seems like on the other boards now the NT scans are like "standard" procedure. Maybe it's just the same people discussing over and over again, but it seems to be all over to me. With DD we found out late and didn't get into researching the testing early enough so we just did the quad screen. Now with this one I'm trying to figure out what we should do. I feel like it so much harder this time around because we know so much more than we did the first time. I guess I'm wondering how many of you actually did the NT Scan and what your reasoning was for doing it? TIA!

Re: NT Scans

  • With DD I didn't even know what it was. However, my OB's office does it as standard procedure so we had it done. Now that I know what it is I will do it with any future pregnancies. If something is going to be wrong I would rather be prepared then surprised.

  • I will always always always opt for it. I would rather know as early as possible if my child is suffering or if I need to prepare for anything. While the NT scan isn't a definitive test, it's just a screening, it helps determine whether or not you should consider more invasive testing.

  • I did it, but I had a prior miscarriage so they were OVERLY "testing" things. Although I got the impression that my Dr. always did the NT Scans regardless of that.

  • We did not because there was nothing that we would've done differently if the tests had shown abnormalities. They have a high rate of false positives so we decided to opt out.

  • We had it done with both kids. It's about preparation for me. I can't say with 100% certainty that I wouldn't have terminated a pregnancy that was not viable (a severe trisomy defect, for example) but I would need to know all of the info ahead of time, and the NT scan is the first line of defense. I wanted to know if I would need specialists at my delivery or special services in place after birth. Not a pleasant surprise at the birth, IMO.

  • I'm not pg, but my dr's never even offered it. :( If I wanted it I couldn't have had it. But I agree with the other ladies, if I had a chance to get it I would have. I'd rather be prepared for what's coming than have it be a surprise.
