The only thing I could think is that it was short for Mattias?  As a full name, Tias is kind of strange!

This is what I thought too. It's a family name, but I don't know more than that.

I know a girl Tais (pr. Tie - EEES) .  It's Brazilian and a really beautiful name I think!  I have never seen/heard of Tias
