What to expect at developmental Pedi Apt

Hey girls,

We finally have our apt on Weds with our developmental pedi.  Any ideas on what to expect?  It is supposed to last for 3 hours and I have already filled out an extensive questionaire.

Thanks!

Re: What to expect at developmental Pedi Apt

  • We had 1 hour with an educational psychologist who just asked us general questions about what types of toys he plays with, how he plays, etc. That was a week before our dev. pedi appt. Then we had 2 full hours with the dev. pedi. He started with more questions, then he dumped out toys in a systematic way. First he gave him purely imaginative toys- people with a sparse doll house. He watched him interact. Then he added some more "fun" toys- cars that made noise, etc. He waited until near the end of the 2 hours to bring out the big guns- cause and effect toys- and let him play with those until we were done. I was shocked that our whole appt was actually done in one of those tiny exam rooms. I couldn't imagine DS being penned in that tiny room for 2 hours with the dr. and I. But he did alright. It was good for the doctor to see DS get a little upset. I had a purse full of suckers and special toys for DS as well. At one point the doctor took DS on a "walk" around the clinic to observe (I stayed back).

  • Hi - I recognize you from my local board. We took our DD to a dev pedi last week. They gave us more forms to fill out and then we met with the pedi. They observed her playing and did a more in-depth history. They asked her questions - what color, shape, number. Had her draw shapes and a person and identify pictures. I think depending on what they see in person and based on the forms determines exactly what they do at the appt. Basically, they just confirmed the findings from her school system evaluation and said she doesn't currently meet the criteria for an autism dx. They also observed some physical findings and said she def has neuro issues but basically they are clueless. I don't know if you are seeing the same one I did or not. You are welcome to PM if you want the name of who we saw. I hope that your appt goes well! Sorry for the lack of paragraphs, I'm on my iPhone.
