Trying to Get Pregnant

Chemically processing hair

This may be a silly question but is it okay to use chemical hair products during the tww? I've researched around a bit and haven't found any solid info either way. I know some people refrain during pregnancy, but are there any major risk if I were to use chemical products during the tww and pregnancy? I ask because I usually go to the salon at least once every few weeks. I would be a little pouty if I had to give up highlights for the entire 9 months (even though it would be totally for a great reason). At least I'll still be able to get my hair blow dried and flat ironed since I haven't heard of those causing any harm.Smile

  • It is fine.
  • Do you have the site that you found that info on? Not that I don't believe you, I just would like to read it for myself.

This is from my OB. If you are concerned just give your doc a call.

  • I would stay away from the Brazilian-type chemical hair straightening processes. The Food and Drug Administration has been looking into these services and there are some adverse effects on women.

  • The chemicals are on your hair, you're not drinking them.  Its fine.  Once you're KU, then ask your OB if you should continue.  Some just suggest waiting until the 2nd trimester.

I know this, my concern is if any of the chemical is absorbed through my skin(via scalp) that it may get in my system and cause adverse effects.
  • Why not just ask your OB?  You asked opinions but then you wanted sources to back them up.  I feel like you should trust the opinion of your OB rather than internet strangers if you are so concerned.

Wild_flower, I'm not sure if you mean highlights, which I'm not discussing, or are responding to my post, in case you were responding to me, I wanted to provide some more information.

Inhalation exposure is the primary route of exposure for formaldehyde, which is the chemical that is in the Brazilian blowout processes. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen, or cancer causing chemical.

You said above you get highlights, those typically are not applied to the scalp but stop short just at the root. That is perfectly fine when TTC and during pregnancy.

I can appreciate that you're concerned...we all have our own things to be concerned about however asking for random internet strangers advice, getting it and they looking for footnotes from their posts seems a bit much. If you want advice so be it but give me a break asking for responders to cite where they have the info from. If it's as much concern to you as it seems either 1. call you dr and get their advice or 2. don't do it

  • Its actually never been studied so there is no research on the subject,  so no one can tell you whether if will affect your fetus that doesn't exist yet or not.

I did color my head, my whole head, while pg, and my DS is just fine.  Take that for what its worth.

  • My hair dresser said its fine too!  She said the only thing we may change when I get pregnant is we may stop the toner for a little bit as that goes directly on my head after the foils.  She said the products have changed so much over the years that its safe now.

I would agree w/ staying away from Brazilian keratin while TTC because when I got it done last year I was choking on the chemicals the whole time and my eyes were burning for like a day.
