2nd Trimester

Cervix is really high and soft at 18weeks

Ok so I got kind of curious and decided to just see what things feel like now and my cervix is really high and really soft. Should I go to the ER or call my Dr? This is my first pregnancy that I have gone this far(1 previous miscarriage) so I am not sure what is normal and what isn't.

  • um stay out of your cervix. why are you poking around in there? poking around is NOT normal, let me tell you that much.

  • You check your cervix when you are TTC so I was curious, but thanks your comment was so helpful!
  • I never checked when I was TTC, so I'm not checking now.  If you are concerned, call the oncall nurse today or call your office tomorrow.  Unless you are bleeding or cramping I wouldn't bother with the ER.

  • Yeah, I would not recommend it. Your only going to cause your cervix to get irrated and than spotting and bleeding will freak you out, and you can introduce infection by sticking your fingers up there.
  • I have been told not to check my own cervix during pregnancy as it can cause problems. Just fyi!

If you are concerned ask your doctor, but I have seen other posts where ladies have asked the same and the general response was that the cervix often does feel soft and "weird" during pregnancy. It is the length of it that matters and that it is not thinning, which will be checked via u/s at 20 weeks.

  • Please leave your cervix alone. You are no longer TTC and therefore have NO CLUE what you are looking for. Stop creating a problem where there isn't one. If you call the doctor and tell them you checked your own cervix at 18 weeks you think it is high and soft you will be told to keep your darn hands out of there.

  • Actually you can check it, if you have clean hands. Duh.  How is clean hands worse than a penis thrusting around up there? Your cervix is supposed to be higher during pregnancy. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I haven't heard of women checking their own cervix during pregnancy (but of course I know it's common when TTC).  When pregnant a high, soft cervix is normal I believe, but I leave that determination up to my OB; I don't personally check it out myself. And there's a reason the doctor does not start doing internals until the end of the 3rd trimester... it's probably best not to poke around in there.

  • I asked my doctor this question when I was there this past appointment (16 weeks) so you are not alone.  I checked mine because after sex I was spotting and wanted to see if it was coming from my cervix. The doctor said that it is normal.  They said that there is no way to feel the part that really matters which is the length and the very top or something. The opening being soft or seeming open is fine.

BTW: I don't know what everyone is getting there panties in a bundle over, my FHs fingers are up there at least once a week and as PP said, my washed hand has to be cleaner than FHs penis.

  • I have never checked my own, but I asked the doctor to check it at my last appointment because I had really frequent BH contractions a few days prior and was worried.  He said my cervix was soft and long.  I asked him what it meant that my cervix was soft, and he told me it meant that I was pregnant.

So I guess that is what it is supposed to feel like.
